Punter Reggie Hodges finally got his chance to replace Ben Graham, who was cut on Sept. 29 for the second time in two weeks. Hodges averaged a net of only 32 yards on two punts in his Jets' debut against Cincinnati, but one was fair caught at the Cincinnati 4-yard-line. The Jets are hoping that Hodges will have more hang time on his punts and be less prone to shanks than Graham.
RB Jesse Chatman has returned after being suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's policy on steroids and related substances, and had one carry for zero yards and one reception for two yards against Cincinnati. Last week, Chatman took FS Eric Smith's place on the roster. Smith was reinstated to the active roster this week. To make room, OL Will Montgomery was waived.
PLAYER NOTES
--WR David Clowney (clavicle) practiced for the second straight day on a limited basis Thursday and there is a strong possibility he could make his 2008 debut at Oakland on Sunday.
--SS Eric Smith is expected to regain his starting spot against Oakland after sitting out against the Bengals because of a one-game NFL-imposed suspension. Abram Elam started in Smith's place versus Cincinnati.
--LB Calvin Pace (foot) was limited in practice Thursday but is expected to play Sunday.
--LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson has allowed only one sack through the first five games.
--CB Justin Miller (toe), who was injured in the preseason and has missed all five games, apparently is ready to play from a physical standpoint. But coach Eric Mangini wouldn't commit to Miller being active against Oakland.
--LB Bryan Thomas (calf), who was injured against Cincinnati, practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. He is expected to play against Oakland. If he can't go, rookie Vernon Gholston likely would start.
--K Mike Nugent (thigh), who was injured opening day and has missed four straight games, will miss another one. He has been ruled out for the Oakland contest.
GAME PLAN: Oakland is in the middle of the pack in terms of run defense, so the Jets should be able to generate some push up front and some room for Thomas Jones. The Raiders like to play press coverage with cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and DeAngelo Hall, Brett Favre could burn them much the way New Orleans' Drew Brees did last week with 320 passing yards and three TDs with no picks. Oakland's fourth-ranked rushing offense, led by dynamic rookie Darren McFadden (5.1 yards per carry), should provide the stiffest test so far in 2008 for the Jets' revived rushing defense, currently third in the NFL. McFadden is the healthiest he has been since suffering a toe injury against Kansas City in Week 2, so the Raiders may use some direct snaps to him, like the ones he got in college at Arkansas.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Jets NT Kris Jenkins vs. Raiders C Jake Grove. Jenkins has singlehandedly improved the Jets' run defense by occupying multiple blockers on a regular basis and freeing up his teammates to make tackles. Grove will try to handle him one-on-one at times and help set the table for RBs Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas and Michael Bush.
Jets WR Laveranues Coles vs. Raiders CB DeAngelo Hall. Two crafty veterans will go at it in this matchup, and the Jets must be wary of Hall, a speedy playmaker who has two interceptions and five pass breakups. Brett Favre's penchant for trying to force the ball into tight spots could haunt him against the ball-hawking Hall. Favre has five picks in his last three games and hasn't had a turnover-free game this season.
Jets LDE Shaun Ellis vs. Raiders RT Cornell Green. Ellis had one sack against Cincinnati, giving him four for the season, one shy of his total for the entire 2005 campaign. Oakland QB JaMarcus Russell has only thrown two interceptions but has fumbled five times this season, losing four, so he is vulnerable to turnovers.
INJURY IMPACT: NT Kris Jenkins (back) is being limited in practice to save his strength for Sundays. CB Justin Miller (toe) is getting healthier and it appears likely he could return to action. WR David Clowney (clavicle) also is getting closer to getting back on the field. He hasn't played since being injured in preseason, but could provide the Jets with some much-needed speed on the offensive perimeter. Jay Feely again will fill in for Mike Nugent (thigh) on placekicks. Feely is 6-for-8 on field-goal attempts and had his best game against Cincinnati, going 2-for-2 from 38 and 43 yards.
