--FS Eric Smith served a one-game suspension for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Arizona WR Anquan Boldin by sitting out the Jets' win over Cincinnati on Oct. 12. Smith is believed to have suffered a concussion himself on the hit, but coach Eric Mangini has indicated he will play in Sunday's game at Oakland. The Jets must make a roster move by 4 p.m. Tuesday to make room for Smith.

--RB Jesse Chatman made his Jets' debut against Cincinnati after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on steroids and related substances.

--WR Laveranues Coles had eight receptions for 61 yards despite being ill. He apparently caught some kind of virus, and was visibly under the weather after the game.

--WR Chansi Stuckey had one carry for one yard and no receptions against Cincinnati, marking the first time in his brief NFL career he has been shut out in the receiving category. He also was called for offensive pass interference on a pick play, negating a touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery.

--RB-KR Leon Washington had his best all-around return game this season. he had two kickoff returns for 65 yards, including a 46-yarder, and five punt returns for 77 yards, including a 22-yarder. His returns helped set up 19 of the Jets' points. On offense, he had five carries for 7 yards and four receptions for 22 yards.

REPORT CARD VS. BENGALS

PASSING OFFENSE: C-minus -- Cincinnati's defensive plan was to limit the deep balls, and it worked pretty well, forcing Brett Favre into forcing some passes, two of which were picked off. But Cincinnati couldn't convert those mistakes into points. Favre also was under duress much of the day, even though he was sacked only twice. (LG Alan Faneca and TE Chris Baker allowed the takedowns.) Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles each had eight catches.

RUSHING OFFENSE: B -- No, the overall numbers weren't great, but the Jets were effective inside the opponent's 10-yard-line for a change. Thomas Jones, who had 65 yards on 17 carries, had two rushing touchdowns, the same amount he'd had in his previous 20 games as a Jet. The offensive line, led by Faneca, had a terrific surge on Jones' 7-yard TD.

PASS DEFENSE: A-minus -- The Jets got a break with backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick starting, and took advantage. They sacked him five times, including a strip sack by blitzing DB Hank Poteat that was recovered by Pace, setting up the Jets' second TD. Cincinnati's longest gain via the air was a 16-yarder to Chad Ocho Cinco, as Fitzpatrick rarely had the time to take any downfield shots. CB Dwight Lowery broke up two passes.

RUSH DEFENSE: A-minus -- Would've been an A-plus if the Bengal ground game wasn't so dreadful to start with. QB Fitzpatrick's six rushes for 23 yards led the Bengals, who totaled 43 yards on the ground and only 20 from RBs Chris Perry and Cedric Benson. Calvin Pace, David Harris and Abram Elam each had a tackle for a loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A-minus -- It was an outstanding day for Leon Washington and the blockers on the return units, as Washington set up 19 points with his excellent returns. Meanwhile, the Jets held Cincinnati's returners in check other than a 41-yard kickoff return by Glenn Holt, which led to nothing. Jay Feely was 2-for-2 on FGs, connecting from 38 and 43 yards. P Reggie Hodges' debut was nothing special, with a net of 32 yards on two boots.

COACHING: B-plus -- Bob Sutton's game plan on defense was very good, as he sent blitzes at inexperienced QB Ryan Fitzpatrick because the Jets weren't worried about the ground game. On offense, the Jets took what the Bengals gave them for the most part, as Cincinnati played a deep zone to take away the long ball, although Favre made some mistakes when he was trying too hard to make something happen.
