--WR Laveranues Coles had six receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown, his first scoring catch of the season, for his best game of 2008. In the first two games of the season, he had four catches for 77 yards.

--TE Chris Baker had three receptions for 26 yards.

--NT Kris Jenkins had one tackle before leaving the game in the first quarter because of a back injury. He didn't return. Coach Eric Mangini said he doesn't think the injury is serious, but Jenkins' presence in the middle was sorely missed in the final three quarters. His ability to occupy blockers in the middle has improved the Jets defense, and he may be the defensive starter they can least afford to have on the shelf.

--DB David Barrett, a cornerback for most of his NFL career, made his first start at free safety, in place of a healthy Eric Smith, who played in a reserve role. Barrett's 25-yard interception return for a score in the first quarter was the first TD of his nine-year NFL career.

--NT Sione Pouha had three tackles. He got the bulk of the work at NT after Kris Jenkins left the game, but the Jets also used DE Mike DeVito there. DeVito also finished with three tackles.

--TE Dustin Keller had the best game of his rookie season, with four receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. He had one catch through the first two games.

--P Ben Graham was re-signed after being waived last week because Reggie Hodges, signed to take Graham's place, was scratched with a thigh injury. Graham had a net average of 38.0 yards on two punts, a big improvement over the 27.3-yard net he had on four punts against New England last week.

REPORT CARD VS. CHARGERS

PASSING OFFENSE: C -- Brett Favre made some positive plays as usual, but also some very negative ones. Antonio Cromartie's excellent interception wasn't really a bad throw by Favre, but the result, a 52-yard touchdown, was. Another pick by Eric Weddle gave the Chargers a short field and was the result of a miscommunication between Favre and WR Jerricho Cotchery. Most of the Jets' 297 yards through the air came underneath when San Diego was giving yardage in the second half while keeping the clock moving.

RUSHING OFFENSE: D-plus -- Really, the proper grade should be incomplete. Once the Jets fell behind by 17 points by halftime, they pretty much had to abandon the running game. Thomas Jones was limited to 37 yards on 10 carries against a San Diego defense that had been allowing 5.4 yards per carry entering this game. Leon Washington had one carry for minus-1 yard.

PASS DEFENSE: C-minus -- David Barrett jumped a route and took a Philip Rivers mistake 25 yards for the first TD in Barrett's nine-year NFL career on the Chargers' first possession, but it was all downhill after that. Rivers wasn't sacked and picked apart the Jets after that, three times hitting WR Buster Davis on third down for drive-sustaining first downs in the first half. And his 60-yard completion to Vincent Jackson in the final quarter set up San Diego's last TD.

RUSH DEFENSE: C-plus -- The Chargers averaged only 3.1 yards per carry for the night, but LaDainian Tomlinson did notch San Diego's first two rushing touchdowns of the season, plus they had a hard time when backup Darren Sproles came in for a change of pace, as his 21-yard jaunt set up a San Diego TD. The Jets had no tackles for losses as they sorely missed NT Kris Jenkins, who left with a back injury in the first quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B-plus -- The Jets' kickoff return unit had a breakout night, as Leon Washington averaged 39.6 yards, including a 94-yarder that set up a touchdown. Jerricho Cotchery took a short kickoff 54 yards to the San Diego 19 to set up another TD. The Jets recovered one onsides kick but failed on two others, including a momentum-changing one in the second quarter. Ben Graham had a net of 38 yards on two punts in his return after being waived last week.

COACHING: C-minus -- Eric Mangini's decision to try an onsides kick with the Jets down by three in the second quarter swung the momentum to San Diego when it was unsuccessful, and the Jets didn't get within single digits again. The game plan on offense was decent, but wasn't well-executed for the most part. The defense had a lot of trouble adjusting after the loss of Jenkins to injury in the first quarter.
