PLAYER NOTES
--OLB Bryan Thomas had two sacks against Miami. Thomas, who is in his seventh season, had only 2.5 sacks in all of 2007 after recording a career-high 8.5 in the 2006 campaign.
--PK Mike Nugent (thigh) could miss at least one game. The Jets worked out free-agent kickers Jay Feely, Dave Rayner and Aaron Elling on Monday, and reportedly have signed Feely.
--QB Brett Favre was sacked three times by Miami in his Jets' debut, and afterward he blamed himself, saying the protection problems were "on me."
--WR Chansi Stuckey's 22-yard, fourth-down touchdown reception from Brett Favre in the second quarter was his first NFL reception. Stuckey was drafted by the Jets in the seventh round in 2007 but spent the season on injured reserve because of a foot problem. He added a 15-yard catch in the second half.
--RB/KR Leon Washington had a mostly quiet day against the Dolphins, rushing for nine yards on six carries and catching two passes for 17 yards. However, he did average 12.8 yards on five punt returns, including a 20-yarder. He also had one kickoff return for 10 yards.
REPORT CARD VS. DOLPHINS
PASSING OFFENSE: B -- Brett Favre showed off both his still-strong right arm and his incredible improvisational skills on his two TD passes. But there were three sacks (Favre took most of the blame for that himself) and the passing game wasn't all that consistent outside of the two big plays. Favre and Laveranues Coles barely missed connecting a couple of times, but still aren't quite in synch because this was the first game action they've had together. Coles didn't play any preseason games because of a thigh injury.
RUSHING OFFENSE: A-minus -- The revamped and improved offensive line did its job as Thomas Jones gained 101 yards on 22 carries, and was able to turn the corner on a 6-yard sweep for a touchdown in the third quarter. Only noticeable glitch here was the Jets' inability to use the rushing attack to ice the game, twice going three-and-out in the fourth quarter.
PASS DEFENSE: B -- The Jets obviously knew they would get a steady diet of dinks and dunks from old friend Chad Pennington, and executed well for the most part in the first three quarters, when Pennington passed for merely 88 yards. CBs Dwight Lowery, making his first start, and Darrelle Revis, made key plays for the secondary, including Revis' game-clinching pick.
RUSH DEFENSE: A-minus -- Having the right pieces for the 3-4 makes a difference, as NT Kris Jenkins demonstrated by clogging up the middle repeatedly. Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown totaled a measly 47 yards on 16 carries. Williams' ineffectiveness may have led to the Dolphins trying two passes on third-and-goal at the 2 in the final quarter. Both were incomplete.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B-minus -- The Jets limited the dangerous Ted Ginn Jr. to 13 yards on three punt returns, and also held the Dolphins' kickoff returners in check. Ben Graham had a 39-yard net on six punts but one was partially blocked. Mike Nugent's thigh injury could've proved disastrous had Pennington made just one more play. The special-teams operations went fairly smoothly despite the fact that former coordinator Mike Westhoff returned the week before the game after an eight-month hiatus because of medical reasons.
COACHING: B-minus -- The Jets drew up solid game plans on both offense and defense, but Eric Mangini turned too conservative on the Jets' next-to-last possession, electing to run on third-and-7 instead of giving Favre a chance to seal the victory with a pass for a first down. It also was surprising that the detail-oriented Mangini didn't have an option for an emergency kicker to replace the injured Nugent, and instead tried for two points after a first-half touchdown. Mangini also lost a replay challenge, costing the Jets a timeout in the second half.
