"That's what I plan on," the 34-year-old cornerback said prior to practicing. "I'm anticipating going out there and playing the game and I'm preparing to play. We'll see what happens. The only thing you can do is go out there and wing it so that's what I'm going to do because I can't say that I'm going to come in here one day and pick up the whole system. I'm going to be playing spot-duty right now and going to try and help this team win."

"I think there's definitely a chance (Law could play Thursday)," said coach Eric Mangini. "He looks good physically, in terms of his overall appearance, weight, those things. I felt very comfortable about (signing him)."

Law, who played for New England from 1995-2004, had a career-high 10 interceptions in 2005 in his one previous season with the Jets. He was named to the Pro Bowl that season.

--Newly signed CB Ty Law has been a mentor to fellow Aliquippa, Pa., native Darrelle Revis since Revis was 7 years old, so Revis naturally was excited that Law now is his teammate.

"Aliquippa is going nuts right now," the Jets' second-year corner said. "I got a whole bunch of calls and text messages (Monday) night. I talked to him before and he said before he retired he wanted us to play together. I know it means a lot to him and it means a lot to me. It's memories that we can share and cherish once he's done."

"I can't wait to physically be able to help (Revis)," Law said. "I call him all the time (and say) 'this guy does this, this guy does that' as far as giving him every little secret that I have on every receiver that he plays. That's what friends do."

--To make room for CB Ty Law on the roster, the Jets waived CB-KR Justin Miller. Miller appeared to have won the starting right cornerback job in training camp, but was sidelined for several weeks because of a dislocated toe suffered in the third preseason game. He didn't play much even after he recovered, as he appeared in only one game this season.

His 2007 season was cut short when he suffered a season-ending knee injury against Baltimore on a kickoff return in the second game. Miller was named to the Pro Bowl in 2006 for his kickoff returns.

"Justin has primarily worked as the outside corner," coach Eric Mangini explained. "(We) didn't see him having an opportunity to be (active) this week. With the DBs that we currently bring to the game, the roles they play on special teams, we have some depth at the outside corner spot. This was more about creating some versatility inside, outside, and in the back end.

"He's an excellent returner," Mangini added. "He's got a really bright future ahead of him. ... I really hope that he continues to develop along the path that he developed. Justin and I spent a lot of time together. I like him a lot personally. I really wish him nothing but the best."

BY THE NUMBERS: 8 -- Rushing touchdowns recorded by Thomas Jones this year. He had only one in the entire 2007 season, and needs one more this year to tie his career high, set with the Bears in 2005.
