New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2008-10-24
--The Jets' upset loss to Oakland on Sunday was painful enough in the standings. But the hard-hitting Raiders have had a lingering effect on the Jets. Three Jets didn't practice Wednesday. They were wide receiver Laveranues Coles (thigh/head), right tackle Damien Woody (left calf) and tight end Bubba Franks (hip). Tight end Chris Baker (back), wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder), right guard Brandon Moore (foot) and strong safety Eric Smith (head) all were limited.

Coles was driven head-first into the ground in the fourth quarter of the Oakland game, and Smith could be having lingering effects from his hard hit on Arizona's Anquan Boldin on Sept. 28. Cotchery appeared to be having trouble raising his arms over his head during the portion of practice the media watched.

--Some media reports have questioned whether Brett Favre's poor performance against Oakland was due to an undisclosed arm injury. Both he and coach Eric Mangini denied that Wednesday.

"I don't think it's a big deal," Favre said. "I've taken 1,000 shots over my career. I'm a little sore today. It's been two days and a long flight. I could play today. I could."

Mangini said Favre is "perfectly healthy."

Favre also indicated he didn't have any problem with the play-calling Sunday, which was criticized as conservative by some.

"I like the way (offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer) calls the games," Favre said. "We have to be more consistent because I can assure you, if you watch the tape like we do, there were plays to be made individually, me included. (There were) numerous plays I could have made that I didn't make. Those are some of the things that people don't see. The game happens so fast, you don't see that. You just kind of think they're running it, why don't they throw it? It's tough on a play caller. It's tough on a head coach. We have to execute, individually, the game plan."

--Mangini wants to make sure his team doesn't overlook Kansas City, despite the Chiefs' young and depleted roster.

"Historically, when you face a team like this and when a team does play a lot of young players, as the season progresses," Mangini said, "they get better and better. As they learn more, get more reps, get more experience, they continue to improve."

"As far as I'm concerned, I really believe that if a team goes out on the field they're going to put their best effort forward," nose tackle Kris Jenkins said. "That's what matters. It doesn't matter what 11 people are on the field, it matters that 11 people are on the field. ... You have to play well."

BY THE NUMBERS: 453 -- Difference in the number of touchdown passes thrown by this week's opposing quarterbacks. All-time career leader Brett Favre has 455. Kansas City's Tyler Thigpen has two.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're just not consistent enough, play-by-play, to really put up the type of numbers and the type of production that we're capable of." -- RT Damien Woody, on the Jets' offense.
