"He'll be out this week," coach Eric Mangini said Wednesday. "We had plans in place and things that we worked on from when we first learned about that, so we'll just proceed along that path."

Smith was placed on the reserve-suspended list by the Jets on Monday. He will be eligible to return for the game at Oakland on Oct. 19 and Mangini expects him to be available from a physical standpoint. Boldin suffered a fractured sinus membrane from the hit, while Smith is believed to have suffered a concussion himself.

Abram Elam, who started eight games last season at free safety, is expected to start in Smith's place, but the ever-vague Mangini also has floated reserves David Barrett and Hank Poteat and current starting right cornerback Dwight Lowery as possibilities.

--The Jets again will wear their blue and gold New York Titans throwback uniforms against the Bengals. It will be the second and final time they wear them this season. They also wore them in their 56-35 win over Arizona. Since re-introducing the uniforms last year, the Jets are 2-1 in them. They lost to Philadelphia, 16-9, last season but then routed Miami, 40-13.

--Coach Eric Mangini's wife, Julie, still hasn't delivered their third child. The baby boy is due on Oct. 10, two days before the Cincinnati game. Her husband had hoped the birth would happen during the bye week, but no such luck.

--QB Brett Favre went home to Mississippi on Thursday of the bye week and returned to New Jersey on Sunday. "I didn't do much of anything," he said with a smile, adding it was mostly "yard work. (It) was pretty boring. Going home for three days is good, but you also see all the things that need to be done (at home). You get stressed out. Then you come back to a non-stressful job."
