Vikings haven't discussed Brett Favre yet

Vikings haven't discussed Brett Favre yet
Vikings coach Brad Childress said the team would talk about retired quarterback Brett Favre at some point, but there hasn't been any discussion so far.

"We haven't (talked about Favre); it doesn't mean we won't," Childress said Friday. "We talk about everything, from what's going on in the United States today. We talk about everything, so yeah, I'm sure we'll talk about that."

That doesn't necessarily mean the Vikings are interested in signing Favre, who became a free agent this week when the New York Jets released him. But Childress didn't rule out the possibility of signing the veteran quarterback.

Childress said the Vikings have been focused on other matters, including their work in the wake of the NFL draft, getting ready for the rookie minicamp this weekend and the players who have been working out at Winter Park.

Asked specifically whether he has talked to Favre, Childress answered carefully.

"I haven't had time to do much aside from reeling in this draft," Childress said. "We've had staff clinics this week from 8 to noon every day, then getting back and putting this minicamp together and then see our guys that are in the building. I'm more focused on the guys that are here participating in the offseason program. I'm more focused on our three quarterbacks right now, Tarvaris (Jackson) and Sage (Rosenfels) and J.D. (Booty) there that our progressing through our offseason program."

Favre was released from the reserve/retirement list by the New York Jets this week. Last summer, the Green Bay Packers accused the Vikings of tampering, saying Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell had inappropriate communication with Favre. The NFL cleared the Vikings of the tampering charge.

Childress and Bevell, a former Packers assistant, have longstanding relationships with Favre.

Fitzgerald solid: Minneapolis native Marcus Fitzgerald appeared to have a solid day, though he did not catch one low pass during the portion of practice open to the media.

"I felt good. But I'm trying to be at the top. I want to be the best," said Fitzgerald, who played at Holy Angels and Marshall University. "I can't afford to have any drops. None. I don't want any."

Fitzgerald, the younger brother of Arizona Cardinals all-pro receiver Larry Fitzgerald, wasn't nervous about the first day at the Vikings' rookie camp. He hasn't received a contract offer, but he's hopeful that he can make a strong impression.

"These guys are all athletes. But I know my will will set me over the top," he said. "I've got to make it happen."

Childress noted that Fitzgerald came into the camp in good shape.

"He's giving a decent accounting of himself here," Childress said. "He has a mind for the game. You can see the wheels are turning when we meet in there offensively. We'll just see if he can distinguish himself out here against the competition."

The biggest Viking : It's official. The Vikings have a player on the roster bigger than left tackle Bryant McKinnie. Second-round pick Phil Loadholt is listed by the Vikings at 6 feet 8, 343 pounds, or eight pounds more than McKinnie's listed weight.

The Vikings believe Loadholt, a right tackle, will be able to compete against quicker pass rushers by using his hands.

"Great reach, athletic, got good feet," Childress said. "With his reach, that length, it's hard to get away from that guy. Then he is massive, like I was telling Bryant McKinnie today."

Briefly: Childress said linebacker Kenny Onatolu could be a valuable contributor on special teams. The coach was impressed with the range and athleticism Onatolu showed in the Canadian Football League last season. The Vikings signed Onatolu on Dec. 29, the day after a private workout.

The Vikings will wrap up their minicamp with two practices today and one Sunday. More than 50 players are at the camp, hoping to get invited to training camp for a chance to make the team. Cole Konrad, the former University of Minnesota two-time NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion, is among them.
