THE PRO PICKS 2008-11-29
Is Matt Cassel for real? We'll find out Sunday when the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town.

The Patriots backup quarterback, who never started a game in college, was thrust into the spotlight when Tom Brady went down with a season-ending knee injury in the season opener vs. Kansas City. It took Cassel several games to get in sync with his offense, but his last two efforts have been a revelation.

In a 34-31 overtime loss to the Jets and a 48-28 win at Miami, Cassel threw for 815 yards and six touchdowns (he also rushed for a score). And although it took a while, he seems to be developing real chemistry with Randy Moss, who caught three TD passes in the Miami win.

But throwing for big numbers vs. the Jets and Dolphins is one thing; doing it vs. the Steelers' top-rated defense is another.

Sunday, the Pats are favored by 1 point over Pittsburgh in a game with huge playoff implications. Sorry Pats fans, but taking the Steelers and the point seems the way to go.

In other games:

NEW YORK Jets (-7 1/2) over Denver - The Jets, who have won four straight, may be the hottest team in the AFC. The Broncos, who still sport a two-game lead in the AFC West despite last week's dismal loss to Oakland, are anything but.

BUFFALO (-6 1/2) over San Francisco - West Coast teams are 0-15 straight up in the Eastern time zone this season, and the 49ers probably won't be the team to stop that skid.

TAMPA BAY (-3 1/2) over New Orleans - A short week and a road game won't give the Saints much time to celebrate their 51-29 Monday night win over the Pack. Points won't come so easy vs. the Bucs, who yield just 11 per game at home.

Carolina (+3) over GREEN BAY - Beating the Pack in Green Bay is always a tough task but the Panthers, after last week's loss to Atlanta and a showdown with Tampa Bay up next, can ill afford another loss to an NFC opponent. Take the points.

New York Giants (-3 1/2) over WASHINGTON - Home cooking is not a Washington staple. The Skins have lost three of their last four home games, and their chances of beating the 10-1 Giants don't look promising. Lay it.

Miami (-9) over ST. LOUIS - After ambushing Washington and Dallas back in October, the Rams have lost five straight games. Lay the points with the Fish.

CINCINNATI (+7) over Baltimore - The Bengals are coming off last week's Thursday nighter at Pittsburgh, and are sure to benefit from the extra rest. They may also catch the Ravens a bit flat after games with the Giants and Eagles.

Indianapolis (-5) over CLEVELAND - The Browns quarterback situation is a mess, with Brady Quinn out for the season and Derek Anderson back under center. No way they trade points with Peyton Manning and Co.

SAN DIEGO (-4 1/2) over Atlanta - All is not lost for the Chargers, who are just two games back in the AFC West to the vulnerable Broncos. With home games vs. Oakland and Kansas City up next, San Diego can get back in the chase but a win here is a must.

Kansas City (+3) over OAKLAND - It is appropriate that this fowl clash is being played on Thanksgiving weekend. If you have to wager on this turkey, take the points and hope the Raiders revert to their one-TD-every-13-quarters style of play.

MINNESOTA (-3) over Chicago - Tough spot for the Bears, who are playing their third road game in a row. Lay the points with the Vikes, who are back in the playoff picture after winning three of their last four.

MONDAY

HOUSTON (-3) over Jacksonville - Playing a Monday nighter is a big deal for the Texans and their fans. They'll be a lot more eager to play than the Jags, who were losing 14-0 before the clock struck 1:05 p.m. last week.

Last week: 10-6-0.

Season: 84-85-4.
