A source told FOXSports.com that the Browns have signed New York Jets safety Abram Elam to a one-year, $1.5 million offer sheet.
Elam played the past two seasons in New York under Mangini, who was fired in December after the Jets failed to reach the playoffs for a second consecutive season. In 2008, Elam notched career highs in starts (9), tackles (69) and passes defensed (3).
The Jets have seven days to match Cleveland's offer. Unlike with higher-tendered players, New York will not receive draft-pick compensation for losing Elam.
Mangini has already hired two position coaches (Bryan Cox and Jerome Henderson) and his offensive coordinator (Brian Daboll) from his former Jets staff. Mangini has dipped into the free-agent market for two other former Jets players -- cornerback Hank Poteat and defensive end C.J. Mosley -- and also is pursuing outside linebacker David Bowens and linebacker Eric Barton.
The Browns lost starting strong safety Sean Jones in free agency to Philadelphia.
