Shawn Andrews tackles new position

Shawn Andrews tackles new position
It's called a minicamp, because it lasts only three days and contact drills are prohibited by NFL rules.

But some topics that were anything but miniature in nature presented themselves Friday when the Eagles opened workouts at their South Philadelphia headquarters.

In one observer's order of significance:

Two-time Pro Bowl right guard Shawn Andrews was at right tackle, and coach Andy Reid said the veteran lineman might stay there. If so, free-agent signee Stacy Andrews, Shawn's brother, would compete -- as Reid put it -- with Nick Cole for the right guard spot once Stacy recovers from a knee injury suffered last season with the Cincinnati Bengals.

It previously was considered a given that Stacy and Shawn would start at tackle and guard, respectively, on the right side, and Jason Peters, acquired from Buffalo in a trade, would start at left tackle next to guard Todd Herremans.

"I think he [Reid] knew my desire to play left tackle before they brought Jason here," Shawn said. "Now, they're going to give me the shot at right tackle."

Cornerback Sheldon Brown, who has started the last 88 regular- and postseason games, was publicly lauded by Reid for showing up and working hard despite the disclosure last week that he has demanded a trade because of unhappiness over his contract.

"I'm just preparing for wherever I play at," Brown said. "I don't know if I'll be here. I can't guarantee that."

Brown added that he will help Ellis Hobbs, the cornerback acquired in a draft weekend trade from New England, learn the basics of playing corner in the Eagles' defense. And he repeatedly cautioned reporters not to compare his current situation with Lito Sheppard's 2008 situation that deteriorated into Sheppard's playing time dwindling and his eventual trade to the New York Jets.

Wide receiver Kevin Curtis, who underwent another sports hernia surgery April 15, and Herremans, who had a "cleanup" arthroscopic knee surgery early in the offseason, joined Stacy Andrews as projected starters who sat out the workout.

Curtis and Herremans could be ready for workouts in early June, and Stacy Andrews remains on schedule to be ready at least in time for training camp in late July, Reid said.

Wideout Jeremy Maclin, the rookie first-round pick, and running back LeSean McCoy, the rookie second-round pick, worked some with the first-team offense.

"It looked like they handled it well," Reid said. "They're doing a lot of thinking right now, but when they get it down, they'll be able to cut loose."

Quarterback Donovan McNabb, who previously expressed a desire to have contract extension talks, and feature back Brian Westbrook, who worked out despite undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in early February, declined to address the media, breaking with what had become tradition for the first day of minicamp workouts. Reid said it was McNabb's choice to not talk, but "somewhere, he'll do that."

Westbrook was overheard telling an Eagles staffer he did not want to talk.

Quintin Mikell and 2008 fourth-round pick Quintin Demps worked as the first-team safeties. Free-agent acquisitions Sean Jones and Rashad Baker worked as second-team safeties.
