Players dispute Wilson's claim on talent

Players dispute Wilson's claim on talent
Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson said the reason his team has lost five of its last six games and is on the verge of being eliminated from the playoffs is it doesn't have enough talent.

None of the players approached in the locker room had heard about Wilson's comments after last Sunday's loss to Miami. Judging from their response, they couldn't disagree more with the 90-year-old owner.

"I think with the guys we have here, we certainly have enough talent to win," wide receiver Lee Evans said. "We have won before, but it's about winning on a consistent basis. That's the goal. That's the point you want to get [to], where you're operating consistently throughout a whole game, a whole season and wins will come."

A lack of talent didn't seem to be an issue when the Bills started 5-1. But when your season is coming apart at the seams, something -- or someone -- has to take the blame.

But despite Wilson's claims, the Bills' players insist they're good enough even if their current slide suggests otherwise.

"I think there are a lot of talented guys on this team," said quarterback J.P. Losman. "I don't see how you could sit there and say Marshawn Lynch is not a talented guy or Fred Jackson or Lee Evans or Trent Edwards. Defensively, you can do the same thing right down the line."

With the team at 6-7 and in last place in the AFC East, the players acknowledge they haven't done much to state their case. So even though they don't like what Wilson had to say, they accept his right to say it.

"Obviously there's talent on this team," defensive end Chris Kelsay said. "Is there enough talent? [Wilson] obviously doesn't think so. He's been around Football for a long time, so he's obviously seen talent and knows when we have it and when we're lacking it. You've got to respect him and his opinions."

Asked if a team can win without Pro Bowl-caliber players, head coach Dick Jauron said individual honors are related to team success.

Jauron had nothing to offer regarding Wilson's comment, which was probably wise given his tenuous job status. But Jauron conceded that his players have underperformed this season.

"I like our talent base," he said. "Clearly you always want to add to it every year. But I like our guys. They work hard and they generate and play hard. We just have not been very productive. We have not played very smart."

The Bills will be without cornerback Jabari Greer for the fourth straight game because of his sprained knee. Greer practiced Wednesday and Thursday, but spent most of Friday's session on the sideline.

Quarterback Trent Edwards is listed as doubtful with a strained groin. Jauron said the chances of Edwards playing on Sunday "are not good" because he has not taken a snap in practice this week.

Backup cornerback Dustin Fox (groin) is questionable. He practiced on a limited basis Friday after not working the previous two days. Defensive tackle Marcus Stroud (hip), wide receiver Josh Reed (back) and safety Donte Whitner (shoulder) practiced and will start Sunday.

For the Jets, the only question mark is backup receiver Brad Smith, who suffered a concussion last week. Coach Eric Mangini would not say Smith is out, but it's been widely reported that he won't play.

Jauron said Friday that there is a possibility defensive end Aaron Schobel might need surgery to repair his injured left foot, which caused him to be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Schobel almost completely tore a ligament near the bottom of his left big toe -- it's termed a Lisfranc injury -- just before halftime in the Week Four game at St. Louis. He completed that game and the next one at Arizona. He was able to practice last week, but the Bills decided to shut him down after there was no improvement.

"As of the end of last week, he really didn't look good," Jauron said. "He tried to push it and it never felt good to him and it got sore."

Jauron added that the team doctors hope the injury will heal itself. If it doesn't, Schobel will need surgery soon so he's back in time for the start of next season. Recovery from Lisfranc surgery takes up to six months.

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney had the same injury last year, but his was more severe.

Lynch and punter Brian Moorman were the only Bills players to get serious consideration for the Pro Bowl in the fan voting, which concluded last Tuesday.

Lynch finished fifth in the AFC at his position with 245,694 votes. Tennessee rookie Chris Johnson was the leading vote-getter at running back with 534,170. He was followed by Miami's Ronnie Brown (481,293), San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson (428,381) and the New York Jets' Thomas Jones (311,784).

Moorman also placed fifth among AFC punters (61,965) behind Oakland's Shane Lechler (108,116), Tennessee's Craig Hentrich (97,496), Pittsburgh's Mitch Berger (66,402) and San Diego's Mike Scifries.

Fans, players and coaches each account for one-third of the votes that determine the 43-man rosters. The players and coaches submitted their ballots Friday. They are not allowed to vote for members of their own team.

The Pro Bowl teams will be announced Tuesday.
