FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Dick Jauron said he hadn't determined who would start Sunday's game against the Jets, though J.P. Losman's appearance on a conference call with New York reporters was probably a pretty fair indication.
Losman started for the injured Trent Edwards last week in Toronto as the Bills lost to the Dolphins, 16-3, Buffalo's sixth defeat in its last seven games. Losman went 13-for-27 for 123 yards with one interception. He was sacked four times as the Bills (6-7) failed to score a touchdown for a second straight game.
"J.P. made some plays in the course of the game, but clearly we didn't make enough plays to win," Jauron said. "We've been really struggling to score points. Two weeks in a row we've only put up three points. We've all got to get better there and I've got to do a much better job of getting them ready to play."
For Losman, who was upset over being replaced by Edwards at the end of last season, the last two games - he took over at halftime against the 49ers - have been an opportunity to showcase himself.
But the offensive tailspin that started with Edwards has continued. Although Losman wouldn't say it, he has to like his chances against the Jets' 31st-ranked pass defense.
"That's an answer that we've been looking for the last few weeks," Losman said. "We've been trying some new things and are trying to figure out who's good at what routes. We've been trying to figure out if teams are going to play the run, or whether they are going to play the pass. Obviously, we haven't figured it out yet."
Injury report
WR Brad Smith, who took a fierce shot in the head late in Sunday's game, did not practice yesterday. Though a determination likely won't be made until game day, look for WR David Clowney, the Jets' fastest player on offense, to see his first action of the season. LB Eric Barton (knee), DB Ahmad Carroll (foot), WR Laveranues Coles (thigh), LB David Harris (groin), NT Kris Jenkins (hip) and LB Bryan Thomas (shoulder) were limited in practice.
