New York Jets Strategy and Personnel 2008-08-14
The Jets made a blockbuster move by trading a conditional draft pick to Green Bay for legendary quarterback Brett Favre, who decided to come back to the NFL after retiring in March and then found out he no longer was welcome with the Packers, who have decided to go with Aaron Rodgers as the starter.

Favre's presence, even at age 38, will give them much more of a vertical presence than they had with former starter Chad Pennington, who was in a battle with Kellen Clemens for the No. 1 job. Pennington was released to make salary-cap room for Favre, and Pennington then signed with division rival Miami, which will face the Jets in Week 1.

--TE Bubba Franks had some problems with dropped passes in the first two weeks of camp, but the addition of Brett Favre should help his cause. Franks, who played eight seasons with the Packers, is the only player on the Jets roster to have caught a pass from Favre in an official NFL game.

--LB Brad Kassell, an integral part of the Jets linebacker rotation as well as a special-teams standout, was placed on injured reserve with a right knee injury. Kassell suffered the injury when he missed Cleveland QB Brady Quinn on a blitz in the preseason opener.

--CB Ahmad Carroll, a first-round selection by Green Bay in 2004 who was signed by the Jets two days before training camp, has been impressive with the reserve defensive units and also has been used as a kickoff returner, and had two returns for 58 yards against Cleveland. He is making a strong case for a roster spot.

--QB Brett Ratliff threw two touchdown passes in the Jets' preseason opener and the second-year player from Utah clearly has established himself as the No. 3 quarterback ahead of fifth-round pick Erik Ainge. Ratliff spent the 2007 season on the practice squad, but if the Jets try to send him through waivers again, he likely will be claimed.

--WR David Clowney had scoring receptions of 70 and 71 yards from Brett Ratliff in the preseason opener and is making a strong case for making the opening-day roster, as he has the best speed of any Jets wideout. He also can be effective covering on kicks.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: There still is a crowded field for the third, fourth and fifth wide receiver spots behind starters Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, but some separation is taking place. Brad Smith, the No. 3 wideout last season, has been having a strong camp, as has Chansi Stuckey, who spent his rookie season of 2007 on IR with a foot problem. David Clowney has taken the lead over special teams ace Wallace Wright for the fifth spot, and it will be very hard for the Jets to cut Clowney.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Justin Miller still is in the lead at right cornerback ahead of David Barrett, but former Green Bay first-round draft pick Ahmad Carroll could work his way into the conversation. Eric Smith has taken the lead over incumbent Abram Elam at free safety. Miller and Elam both started the preseason opener.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LB David Bowens -- Bowens has made an excellent transition from the outside to the inside, and has been a very visible presence both in practice and in the preseason opener at Cleveland, in which he had five tackles on defense and one on special teams. Bowens came to the Jets last season with a reputation as a good situational pass rusher, which he showed in 2007, but there's more to his game than that.

ROOKIE REPORT: LB Vernon Gholston is coming along slowly, although he has shown flashes of his outstanding pass-rushing ability against the Jets' backup offensive linemen. ... TE Dustin Keller has impressed with his ability to get deep on the outside and over the middle on seam routes, and he should be an integral part of the offense considering how much Brett Favre likes to throw to his tight ends. ... CB Dwight Lowery had an excellent preseason debut, with a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown and a key interception at Cleveland. ... QB Erik Ainge is getting some reps with the reserves, but has gotten much fewer practice snaps than Brett Ratliff, who spent last season on the practice squad. Ratliff is way ahead of Ainge in the battle to be the No. 3 QB. ... WR Marcus Henry has been sidelined recently by a leg injury. ... T Nate Garner is working with the reserves.

INJURY REPORT: LB Brad Kassell (knee) has been placed on injured reserve.

LB David Harris (leg) returned to practice after missing over a week of workouts.

TE Chris Baker (back) was removed from the PUP list and started against Cleveland as the Jets opened in a double-tight end set with Baker and Bubba Franks.

RB Jesse Chatman (undisclosed) is practicing, but on a limited basis.

LB Jason Trusnik (foot) still is on the PUP list.

OL Clint Oldenburg (knee) was waived injured.

Rookie WR Marcus Henry (leg) has been sidelined recently and eventually could be a candidate for PUP or injured reserve.
