The Jets still haven't settled their secondary. Veteran CB Ty Law has started the last four games at RCB, replacing Dwight Lowery, who still is struggling somewhat in a more limited role. Last week, the Jets signed S J.R. Reed, who was released by Philadelphia in October. Reed could become the latest nickel back to cover the slot receiver, a role that both David Barrett and Drew Coleman have struggled at.
Veteran QB Brett Favre is having trouble completing deep passes, partly because he has been inaccurate, and partly because his wideouts can't get enough separation. David Clowney, who was a revelation during the preseason before suffering a fractured clavicle, is healthy now and finally appeared in a game. He is the fastest wide receiver on the squad and made a nifty catch for a 26-yard reception against Buffalo. The Jets should try to throw the ball to him more often.
PLAYER NOTES
--K Mike Nugent, who hasn't played since suffering a strained right thigh on opening day, is off the injury report and still on the roster, but it seems unlikely he'll play again this season. His replacement, Jay Feely, has connected on his last 12 field-goal attempts.
--P Reggie Hodges had a second straight subpar game against Buffalo, but it appears his job is safe, for now. The Jets didn't bring in any punters to challenge him this week.
--C Nick Mangold, who is in his third season and was selected for his first Pro Bowl, has benefited from having savvy veteran LG Alan Faneca to his left. Mangold had a subpar 2007 after the Jets traded away his first NFL mentor, LG Pete Kendall.
--WR Brad Smith (concussion), the victim of a vicious but legal hit San Francisco's Patrick Willis on Dec. 7, practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. His status for the Seattle game is uncertain.
--RB Thomas Jones, who leads the AFC with 1,222 yards, won the Jets' in-house awards for team MVP and most inspirational player. Jones has set franchise records with 15 overall touchdowns and 13 rushing TDs.
--LB Vernon Gholston, who has yet to record a sack this season, might sit out again Sunday at Seattle. Gholston was a healthy scratch for the first time this season against Buffalo.
GAME PLAN: QB Brett Favre needs to play four solid quarters, something he hasn't done since the victory over Tennessee on Nov. 23. He should have open receivers to choose from, considering the Seahawks are last in the NFL in pass defense. Thomas Jones, who is leading the AFC in rushing, certainly will want to look good in front of his kid brother, Seattle RB Julius Jones. The Jets' run defense needs to get back where it was earlier in the season, or else Jones and Maurice Morris will run roughshod, much like Buffalo's Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson did Sunday. They did rediscover their pass rush with three sacks against the Bills, and should be able to pressure Seattle backup QB Seneca Wallace, who is playing behind a banged-up offensive line.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Jets CB Darrelle Revis vs. Seahawks WR Deion Branch. Branch has recovered from a heel injury and has been quite effective in the last three games, with 14 receptions for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Whether Seneca Wallace retains the starting job or Matt Hasselbeck can return from injury, the Seahawks certainly will test a Jets pass defense that is ranked 29th in the NFL.
Jets WR Laveranues Coles vs. Seahawks CB Marcus Trufant. Coles, who had been limited to three catches in the previous two games, had five receptions for 82 yards against Buffalo, although he had a costly drop that turned into an interception. Trufant has only one interception this season, but he had seven picks last year. And don't forget, Brett Favre leads the NFL with 17 interceptions this season.
Jets NT Kris Jenkins vs. Seahawks C Steve Vallos. Vallos is a converted guard who is making his third straight start because Chris Spencer (back) is out for the season. He did OK against St. Louis, as Maurice Morris (86 yards) and Julius totaled 104 yards on 19 carries versus the Rams. Jenkins was an unstoppable force for much of this season, but has slipped somewhat lately, perhaps because of a nagging hip injury.
INJURY IMPACT:
--OT Wayne Hunter (shoulder) was added to the injury report Thursday and was limited in practice. The Jets often use Hunter as an extra tight end in short-yardage situations, and he was the escort for Brett Favre on his 27-yard fourth-down bootleg against the Bills.
--NT Kris Jenkins (hip) again was limited in practice Thursday. The Jets are trying to conserve some of Jenkins' energy for game day as he has been nicked up recently.
--WR Brad Smith (concussion) practiced limited again Thursday and coach Eric Mangini said he was "encouraged" by Smith's progress.
