PLAYER NOTES

--P Reggie Hodges' job might be in jeopardy. He had a 26.5-yard net on four punts against Buffalo, including two touchbacks. The Jets brought in Scott Player for a workout last week, and may audition another punter or two this week.

--FB Tony Richardson had a 12-yard run to the Buffalo 2 to set up the Jets' first TD, and finished with 13 yards on two carries.

--LB Vernon Gholston was a healthy scratch for the first time this season. The sixth overall pick has had a hard time getting on the field this season other than for special teams, and still doesn't have a sack.

--K Jay Feely connected on his lone field-goal attempt, from 31 yards, and has made 12 consecutive field goals. However, coach Eric Mangini chose not to have Feely attempt a field goal with the Jets leading by four and facing a fourth-and-2 at the Buffalo 25 late in the game.

--RB/KR Leon Washington had only one carry, but he made it count, breaking loose for a 47-yard touchdown. He also had one reception for 7 yards on offense. On special teams, he had no punt returns and six kickoff returns for 132 yards, with a long gain of 43.

REPORT CARD VS. BILLS

PASSING OFFENSE: C-minus -- Tale of two halves, as Brett Favre threw for 149 yards in the first half as the intermediate pass returned to the offense, but managed only 58 after halftime. The first of his two interceptions wasn't his fault, as Laveranues Coles should've had it, but the second one was underthrown, much like most of his deep throws in recent weeks. David Clowney made a terrific catch but wasn't thrown to again.

RUSHING OFFENSE: A-minus -- Another solid game by Thomas Jones, who averaged just under four yards per carry. Leon Washington's 47-yard TD run was perfectly executed and blocked, just like it was drawn up, and Washington's incredible burst did the rest. Favre even got in on the fun for the second straight week, this time with a 27-yard bootleg on fourth down. He had a 2-yard TD run against the 49ers.

PASS DEFENSE: B-plus -- Blitzing SS Abram Elam's strip sack of J.P. Losman, followed by Shaun Ellis' recovery and return for a TD, saved the game and maybe the season. Losman turned the ball over four times in the fourth quarter. LB Calvin Pace had two sacks, and CB Ty Law did an excellent job on Buffalo's deep threat, Lee Evans, who had four receptions for a measly 22 yards.

RUSH DEFENSE: F -- One has to wonder if NT Kris Jenkins is wearing down, or if the injured hip that limited him in practice last week is bothering him, as his play has fallen off the last three weeks. The Bills double-teamed Jenkins often and the rest of the Jets couldn't handle Marshawn Lynch or Fred Jackson at the point of attack, allowing 5.8 yards per carry, making Buffalo coach Dick Jauron's fateful call for a play-action pass that much more baffling.

SPECIAL TEAMS: D-minus -- Only the holding penalty on Buffalo's Jon Corto, which wiped out Leodis McKelvin's 100-yard kickoff return for a TD, keeps this grade from an F. P Reggie Hodges had a horrible 26.5-yard net average, thanks to two touchbacks and Roscoe Parrish's 56-yard return, which set up a TD. For the second straight game, James Ihedigbo had a holding penalty on a kickoff return, and the Jets were victimized by a fake punt for the second straight game.

COACHING: B-minus -- Eric Mangini's best move of the day was not a terrific call at first glance, as taking a timeout with 2:06 left saves a mere six seconds. But because it enticed Jauron into overruling his offensive coordinator and calling the pass play that became the Jets' winning TD, it became a stroke of genius. Other than that, the game plan wasn't great as the defense didn't blitz enough until the game-deciding play, and the offense didn't get Washington involved enough.
