New York Jets Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-29
PLAYER NOTES

--RB Jesse Chatman likely is done for the year because of a left knee injury suffered Sunday. "Odds are it's going to be season-ending," coach Eric Mangini said. Chatman was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season for taking a banned substance, believed to be a diuretic. His absence again will leave the Jets with only two running backs, Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, on the roster.

--RB/KR Leon Washington had a career-high 274 all-purpose yards. He had three carries for 67 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown sprint, and three receptions for 34 yards, including an 18-yard score. He also averaged 25.5 yards on four kickoff returns and averaged 23.7 yards on three punt returns.

--FS Kerry Rhodes had his first sack of the season against Kansas City. He still is looking for his first interception of 2008 after picking off five passes in 2007.

--TE Chris Baker's status for the Buffalo game is uncertain after he sat out against Kansas City when a hip injury flared up shortly before game time.

--K Jay Feely missed his only field-goal attempt Sunday when he was wide left from 36 yards. Feely, who still is filling in for the injured Mike Nugent, had connected on eight of his previous nine attempts before that miss.

REPORT CARD VS. BENGALS

PASSING OFFENSE: D-plus -- Brett Favre's game-winning TD pass, on which Laveranues Coles made a tremendous catch, allowed this unit to end on a high note, but mostly it was another frustrating day for Favre. He threw a season-high three interceptions, one for a score. Although Favre was sacked only once, he was pressured often, which may have led to some of his many ill-advised throws. Kansas City's Derrick Johnson dropped another pick that was a potential score for the Chiefs.

RUSHING OFFENSE: B -- Although the Jets averaged 5.6 yards per carry, there wasn't a lot of consistency, as much of that lofty average was accomplished due to one play -- Leon Washington's beautifully blocked 60-yard TD burst. Thomas Jones chipped in with his fourth rushing TD of the season, three more than he had in all of 2007.

PASS DEFENSE: C-minus -- The four sacks of young Tyler Thigpen, including a crucial one by LB David Bowens on the Chiefs' final drive, were the highlights here. Otherwise, Thigpen was quite effective, hurting the Jets with throws to WR Dwayne Bowe and TE Tony Gonzalez, both of whom had six catches. This was the third consecutive game in which the Jets didn't record an interception, despite facing three young QBs. FS Kerry Rhodes had his first sack of 2008.

RUSH DEFENSE: B-minus -- The Jets were again solid in this area except for one play -- Jamaal Charles' 30-yard draw on third-and-10 on the Chiefs' final drive of the first half, leading to a touchdown. Rhodes had two tackles for losses on runs, and the run defense rose up when it counted most, limiting Kansas City to 9 yards on three plays when a first down could have iced it for the Chiefs.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B -- Leon Washington's scintillating 37-yard punt return positioned the Jets for the go-ahead TD late in the game, and he averaged 23.7 yards in that category. Reggie Hodges had a net of 38.7 yards on seven punts, and he could've had a better average had Cody Spencer not inadvertently carried one punt from the Kansas City 2 into the end zone. Jay Feely missed his only field-goal attempt, from 36 yards.

COACHING: C-plus -- The Jets' offensive game plan didn't take enough advantage of the Chiefs' rushing defense, ranked last in the league entering Sunday, but the hosts were hamstrung without excellent blocker Chris Baker (hip) in the lineup. Eric Mangini won a challenge in the third quarter, saving the Jets 25 yards of field position when he correctly claimed that Kansas City's Brad Cottam was down by contact. The Jets also benefited from the strategy of their former coach, as Herm Edwards' late-game conservatism cost the Chiefs a chance to win.
