New York Jets Strategy and Personnel 2008-07-31
--RB Danny Woodhead was waived-injured after suffering what appeared to be a serious and perhaps season-ending knee injury on the second day of practice. The rookie free agent, who was the all-time NCAA career-leading rusher at Division II Chadron (Neb.) State, had impressed the coaching staff and certainly had a chance to be on the practice squad.

--CB Ahmad Carroll, a first-round selection by Green Bay in 2004, was signed by the Jets two days before training camp. He was released by the Packers in 2006 after being burned repeatedly, and was picked up by Jacksonville. But the Jaguars released him in May 2007 after he was arrested on charges of drug and weapons possession.

--NT Kris Jenkins is trying to get used to the life of a 3-4 nose tackle, which means a lot of grunt work and not much glory. As a 4-3 tackle, he made the Pro Bowl three times with Carolina, but the Jets are asking the 359-pounder to control two gaps, occupy blockers and allow others, for the most part, to make the plays.

--CB Darrelle Revis has been returning punts and kickoffs in camp. Revis was an outstanding punt returner in college, but the Jets chose not to use him on returns last season as a rookie, perhaps figuring he had enough on his plate with the transition to being an NFL corner. This year could be a different story.

--RB Musa Smith was slowed by injuries throughout his five-year career with Baltimore, but the free-agent pickup has flashed plenty of speed early in camp and will contend for a roster spot.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Chad Pennington vs. Kellen Clemens for starting QB -- Just as in 2006, the Jets are having a competition for the highest-profile position on the team. In that summer, Pennington won a four-way battle with Clemens, Patrick Ramsey and Brooks Bollinger. Pennington seems to have again taken an early lead this time around, as he has looked fairly sharp early in camp. Meanwhile, Clemens threw one interception each of the first three days of camp, although one was juggled by WR Laveranues Coles into the hands of CB David Barrett and thus really wasn't Clemens' fault.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Justin Miller appears to have the early lead at RCB ahead of David Barrett, Drew Coleman and Hank Poteat. ... There is a crowded field for the third, fourth and fifth wide receiver spots behind starters Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery. That field includes former quarterback Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey, special-teams ace Wallace Wright, speedster David Clowney and 6-foot-4 rookie Marcus Henry.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: QB Brett Ratliff -- Who needs that other Brett? Ratliff, a free agent from Utah who spent last season on the Jets' practice squad, has shown a strong arm and plenty of accuracy early in camp. In fact, the coaching staff has given him some reps with the first team because they like his progress so much, as opposed to last year when he was a rookie. "We wouldn't have thought about doing that last year," coach Eric Mangini said of giving Ratliff some chances with the starters.

ROOKIE REPORT: LB Vernon Gholston is "swimming" so far, according to coach Eric Mangini, as he tries to catch up. Gholston missed the first day of practice as well as the prior week of rookie orientation. ... TE Dustin Keller has lined up as an in-line tight end, but also has been split wide sometimes. ... CB Dwight Lowery is working with the subs and in extra-DB packages. ... QB Erik Ainge is getting some reps with the reserves. ... WR Marcus Henry looks to be a good target in the red zone, thanks to his 6-4 frame. ... T Nate Garner is working with the reserves.

INJURY REPORT: RBs Jesse Chatman and Musa Smith missed the first day of practice because they were on the non-football injury list, but returned the next day.

RB-KR Danny Woodhead (left knee) was waived-injured.

RT Damien Woody (eye) missed the second practice on the third day of camp.
