PLAYER NOTES
--FB Tony Richardson had one reception for 4 yards. That's one more touch than the Jets' previous fullbacks, Darian Barnes and Stacy Tutt, had all of last season.
--K Mike Nugent (strained right thigh) missed the New England game and coach Eric Mangini was non-committal on whether he would play at San Diego on Monday night.
--P Ben Graham averaged only 27.3 net yards on four punts against New England and coach Eric Mangini intimated Monday that he might look at other punters if Graham doesn't improve.
--WR Chansi Stuckey has two touchdown receptions in his first two NFL games. After grabbing a 22-yarder from Brett Favre on fourth down in the Jets' opener, he had a 2-yard touchdown catch against New England.
--RB-KR Leon Washington had two rushed for 28 yards and four receptions for 22 yards against New England. The Patriots' special teams gave him only one opportunity in the return game, a 24-yard kickoff return to the Jets' 20. New England's Stephen Gostkowski notched five touchbacks and put each of his six kickoffs into the end zone.
REPORT CARD VS. PATRIOTS
PASSING OFFENSE: C-plus -- Brett Favre made some positive plays, but only when he was out of the pocket, improvising. He also made some negative plays, including an interception to Brandon Meriweather that led to the Patriots' lone touchdown. The protection wasn't great. Although Favre was sacked only twice, both were important ones, including one by Richard Seymour near the end of the first half. Seymour's sack backed the Jets up to their own 16 and precluded them from trying to get into field-goal range before the half ended.
RUSHING OFFENSE: C-plus -- Yeah, the 5.0-yards per carry is nice, but it's a bit bloated by Leon Washington's meaningless 17-yard run on the last play of the first half. Plus, the running attack failed when the Jets needed it most, as Thomas Jones netted zero yards on three consecutive carries from the Patriots' 3 in the second quarter, forcing the Jets to settle for a FG.
PASS DEFENSE: B-minus -- The Jets got pressure on untested Matt Cassel, sacking him three times, but never took him out of his comfort zone and couldn't stop the screens to WR Wes Welker and RB Kevin Faulk. WR Randy Moss (two catches for 22 yards) was a non-factor thanks mainly to CB Darrelle Revis, who was beaten by Moss on a go route but recovered to break up the underthrown pass. Had Cassel hit Moss in stride, the play would've gone for a 52-yard touchdown.
RUSH DEFENSE: B -- The Patriots averaged only 1.8 yards per carry in the first half, but were much better in the second half once former Jet LaMont Jordan got rolling. Jordan, replacing the injured Laurence Maroney, had 62 yards on 11 carries as New England averaged 4.0 yards an attempt in the final 30 minutes. NT Kris Jenkins and SS Kerry Rhodes each had two tackles for losses.
SPECIAL TEAMS: D-plus -- Very little went right for this unit. Fill-in K Jay Feely sliced a 31-yard FG attempt wide right in the first quarter. Ben Graham had a 27.3-yard net on four punts. The Jets had only one punt or kickoff return, Leon Washington's 24-yard kickoff return to his own 20. New England's Stephen Gostkowski booted five touchbacks, neutralizing the dangerous Washington.
COACHING: D -- The second-quarter sequence of three running plays after a first-and-goal provided much to second-guess, especially considering TE Chris Baker and Bubba Franks, Favre's former Green Bay teammate, are both effective in the red zone. Eric Mangini's conservatism seems to be cramping Brett Favre's style, although Favre hasn't complained. The defense didn't do enough to unsettle Cassel or take away the short passes to Welker and Faulk, which resulted in 122 of Cassel's 165 yards passing.
