The Jets made a blockbuster move by trading a conditional draft pick to Green Bay for legendary quarterback Brett Favre, who decided to come back to the NFL after retiring in March and then found out he no longer was welcome with the Packers, who have decided to go with Aaron Rodgers as the starter.
Favre's presence, even at age 38, will give them much more of a vertical presence than they had with former starter Chad Pennington, who was in a battle with Kellen Clemens for the No. 1 job. Pennington was released to make salary-cap room for Favre, and Pennington then signed with division rival Miami, which will face the Jets in the season opener.
--DE Shaun Ellis has missed two weeks of practice and the first two preseason games with a fractured right hand, although he recently had the wrap removed from it. Coach Eric Mangini indicated he expects Ellis to be ready for the regular-season opener at Miami on Sept. 7.
--QB Kellen Clemens is being challenged for the No. 2 job by Brett Ratliff, a former undrafted free agent who spent last season on the practice squad. In seven preseason possessions, Clemens has yet to lead the Jets offense to any points. However, he was victimized by four dropped passes against the Redskins.
--RT Damien Woody has had problems in practice, as he has had to run a lap in most of the Jets' workouts for committing a false-start penalty. Against the Redskins, he was partially responsible for the lone sack of Brett Favre, as was RG Brandon Moore.
--DB James Ihedigbo, who spent last year on injured reserve with a fractured wrist, helped his cause of making the roster in the first half against Washington, and then hurt it in the second half. He intercepted a pass from the Redskins' Derek Devine at the Jets' 1 in the second quarter, ending a Washington scoring threat. But in the fourth quarter, he played the ball instead of the receiver and whiffed when he tried to knock down a pass to Jason Goode, who scored the eventual game-winner on a 33-yard reception.
--QB Brett Ratliff continued his strong play against Washington, leading the Jets to a fourth-quarter field goal and nearly engineering the game-winning drive. Ratliff's pass to rookie free agent Paul Raymond in the end zone was dropped by Raymond. He is 27-for-39 for 400 yards and two touchdowns in two preseason games.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Justin Miller got his second straight start at RCB ahead of David Barrett, but Barrett played with the first-team defense on Washington's second drive. However, Barrett committed a pass-interference penalty that prolonged Washington's second drive. Former Green Bay first-round draft pick Ahmad Carroll, who has been impressive in practice, also could work his way into contention and don't be surprised if rookie fourth-round pick Dwight Lowery eventually wins the job later in the season.
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: There still is a crowded field for the third, fourth and fifth WR spots behind starters Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, but some separation is taking place. Brad Smith, the No. 3 wideout last season, has been having a strong camp, as has Chansi Stuckey, who spent his rookie season of 2007 on IR with a foot problem. David Clowney has taken the lead over special teams ace Wallace Wright for the fifth spot, and it will be very hard for the Jets to cut Clowney. However, Clowney suffered a shoulder injury and had to leave the Washington game, and it wasn't immediately known how severe it is.
Eric Smith apparently has won the job over incumbent Abram Elam at free safety. Smith, a third-year player, has started both preseason games.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR Jerricho Cotchery -- Cotchery has quickly developed a rapport with QB Brett Favre. Cotchery had two receptions for 30 yards from Favre against Washington. Laveranues Coles, the Jets' other starting wideout, has sat out the first two preseason games because of leg woes and hasn't had as much time to work with Favre. Cotchery displayed his ability to get deep by catching a go route from Favre in practice, a ball that traveled over 70 yards in the air.
ROOKIE REPORT: LB Vernon Gholston still is coming along slowly, although he said he is feeling more comfortable as a standup linebacker after being a defensive end most of the time during his college career. He had three tackles against Washington. ... TE Dustin Keller scored his first preseason touchdown on a 4-yard pass from Brett Favre against Washington, and he should be an integral part of the offense considering how much Favre likes to throw to his tight ends. ... CB Dwight Lowery had a 15-yard punt return against the Redskins and worked with the backups on defense. ... QB Erik Ainge is getting some reps with the reserves in practice, but has yet to throw a pass in a preseason game. Coach Eric Mangini said Ainge would have played in overtime had the Jets tied the score against Washington. ... WR Marcus Henry had been sidelined by a leg injury, but made his preseason debut against Washington and had four catches for 42 yards in a reserve role. ... T Nate Garner worked with the reserve units against Washington.
INJURY REPORT: LB Brad Kassell (knee) has been placed on injured reserve.
WR Laveranues Coles (leg) and DE Shaun Ellis (fractured hand) have both sat out the first two preseason games.
LB David Harris (leg) returned to practice after missing over a week of workouts and started against Washington.
RB Jesse Chatman (undisclosed) sat out the first preseason game, but had team highs in carries (11) and yards (45) against the Redskins.
LB Jason Trusnik (foot) still is on the PUP list.
OL Clint Oldenburg (knee) was waived injured and cleared waivers, but rather than bringing him back and placing him on injured reserve, the Jets reached an injury settlement with him.
Rookie WR Marcus Henry (leg) has returned to action and had four catches against Washington.
WR David Clowney also had four receptions against the 'Skins, but suffered a shoulder injury and had to leave the game, and it wasn't immediately known how severe it is.
