New York Jets Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-09

New York Jets Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-09
The Jets improved their defense in the first few days of the free-agent signing period, bringing in ILB Bart Scott, a rising star, from Baltimore. He will replace Eric Barton, a defensive stalwart since coming over as a free agent before the 2004 season. Scott is three years younger than Barton.

Also added were free agent S Jim Leonhard, also from Baltimore, and CB Lito Sheppard, acquired in a trade from Philadelphia. Sheppard had fallen out of favor with the Eagles and was replaced in the starting lineup by Asante Samuel last season, but the Jets believe he can recapture his two-time Pro Bowl form.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

Now that the Jets have taken care of their defense for the most part, they must now look at the offense. With former Jet Chris Baker now a New England Patriot, the team has a major need for a tight end who can block effectively, if coach Rex Ryan's planned "all-weather offense" is to reach its full potential.

They also need a new starting wide receiver now that Laveranues Coles has signed with Cincinnati. The Jets preferably need someone with speed, although there figures to be more speed on offense next season thanks to the signing of Leonhard. He will return punts, allowing dynamic Leon Washington to concentrate on kickoff returns and to get more touches on offense.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Wide receiver: The Jets need a speedster who can stretch defenses, something they've lacked since trading away Santana Moss after the 2004 season.

2. Tight end: The Jets need a tight end who can block, now that Chris Baker has been released.

3. Defensive end: The Jets still could use another big-time edge rusher, and veteran Shaun Ellis' production dropped markedly during the second half of 2008.

MEDICAL WATCH: NT Kris Jenkins (hip, back) didn't miss any games, but those injuries may have limited the Pro Bowler's effectiveness the last five games.

--LB David Harris (fractured ankle) left the final game. He attended Rex Ryan's introductory news conference on crutches. He already had a surgical procedure to repair a groin injury and missed the entire month of November. He is expected to be ready for spring practice in May.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: None.

TRANSITION PLAYER: None.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--ILB Eric Barton was the team's leading tackler in 2008, but will look for a payday elsewhere now that Bart Scott has been signed to replace him.

--CB Ahmad Carroll was signed as a street free agent just before camp, and was good on special teams. The organization likes him and he will be back.

--RB Jesse Chatman's 2008 season was curtailed by a four-game suspension and a knee injury, but returning offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer likes him, so he could return.

--TE Bubba Franks didn't have much left in the tank and won't be back, especially now that former Green Bay teammate Brett Favre has retired.

--CB Ty Law was solid after being signed off his couch in mid-November and could play again in 2009, although if he does, it will be elsewhere.

--CB Hank Poteat is an Eric Mangini favorite so chances are he will wind up in Cleveland.

--S J.R. Reed didn't get on the field after being signed in November. Doesn't figure to be re-signed because there are better options out there.

--OLB Cody Spencer is a special-teams standout so the Jets could look to re-sign him if the cost isn't too prohibitive.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--SS Abram Elam (tendered at $1.01M with no compensation) is a hard hitter who is subpar in coverage, yet has an uncanny knack for the big play. Could leave because he figures to lose starting job to newly-signed Jim Leonhard.

EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENTS

--WR David Clowney is the Jets' fastest wideout, but couldn't get on the field under the Eric Mangini regime. Could get more of a chance now.

--OLB Marques Murrell didn't get much of a chance to show his wares under the previous coaching regime, but could be re-signed if Rex Ryan likes what he sees on Murrell's limited tape.

--QB Brett Ratliff has impressed the organization and will be given a chance to win the starting quarterback position.

--WR Wallace Wright is strictly a special-teamer at this point, but he does that very well. Is likely to return.
