-- CB David Barrett, who started 37 games in five seasons with the Jets, was released by the team. The move saves the Jets more than $5 million against the salary cap.
--One of the concepts new Jets coach Rex Ryan is taking from a year under Baltimore coach John Harbaugh is a weekly Tuesday night meeting involving the head coach, and the three assistants in charge of offense, defense and special teams.
As of Jan. 21, Ryan knew the identity of two of the other three men who will be at those meetings. He hopes soon to know who will be the other one.
Ryan introduced his defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine, who was outside linebackers coach with the Ravens since 2005 and was an assistant with Baltimore since 2002. Veteran special teams coach Mike Westhoff was in the auditorium while Ryan was conducting his first news conference as a head coach, and he is staying on.
Ryan was able to convince offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to stay in his current position, despite being passed over for the job that went to Ryan.
"If anybody has gone through what Brian has, I know the disappointment he's feeling by not getting this job," Ryan said.
