New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2008-08-13
--The Jets acquired quarterback Brett Favre from Green Bay for a conditional 2009 draft pick.

According to published reports, the pick will start as a fourth-rounder, but will rise to a third-rounder if Favre plays at least 50 percent of the Jets' snaps at quarterback. It will be a second-rounder if he plays at least 70 percent of the snaps and the Jets make the playoffs. It will rise to a first-rounder if he plays at least 80 percent of the snaps and the Jets reach the Super Bowl.

Favre indicated the day after he was traded that if he couldn't play for Green Bay, he would've preferred to play for Minnesota. But once the Packers made it clear he wouldn't be traded within the NFC North, Favre had to look elsewhere.

The final decision came down to Tampa Bay and the Jets. Favre said that while Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden "sold me very well," Favre also was quite impressed by the sales pitch he got from Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

"I wouldn't talk to him (until this week)," Favre said. "I knew I'd be convinced (to come to the Jets) once I talked to him."

--Once Brett Favre and his $12 million salary had been traded to the Jets, they needed to make some salary-cap room. They did so by releasing Chad Pennington, who had a cap figure of $6 million for 2008.

Pennington quickly landed on his feet, as he signed a two-year, $11.5 million deal with Miami two days after the Jets got Favre.

"I don't have any regrets," Pennington said in a conference call hours before signing with Miami. "I don't have hard feelings toward anyone.

"The (Jets') organization didn't feel I was the quarterback to lead them where they wanted to go," Pennington added. "That's extremely clear. That's fine. That's part of being in the business. That's why you can't take it personal. ... The most difficult part of the last 24 hours is coming to the realization that you're no longer wanted by your organization. You've been there eight years and in the blink of an eye, you're not wanted. But I have an inner peace about it."

Miami's vice president of football operations is Bill Parcells and its offensive coordinator is Dan Henning, both of whom have worked with Pennington in the past. The Dolphins open the season by hosting the Jets on Sept. 7, which will lead to an interesting reunion if Pennington wins the starting job, as he is expected to do.

"I don't have revenge on my mind or anything like that," Pennington said when asked about that game. "I have one thing on my mind and that's a victory. Period."

--Brett Favre repeatedly has told Eric Mangini that he doesn't want any special treatment despite his iconic statement.

No problem, Brett. So he knew what was going to happen when he mishandled a snap from center Nick Mangold in his second practice. Both of them had to run a penalty lap.

"It's not punishment," said Favre through a team spokesman. "It's more of a team unity thing. Nick and I ran it. I told Eric (from) day one, that unless I pass out, I am going to try to do everything that everyone else does. I'm no different aside from being a little gray-headed and a little bit older."

A fan at the practice videotaped the penalty lap and quickly put it up on YouTube.

"I need to call my mom and have her tape ESPN," Mangold said, smiling. "Hopefully, I got on there today with a penalty lap. It was weird because it's a penalty lap and you're running it because you've done something wrong and people are cheering. It was a little different."

Mangold asked Favre if he was at fault for the botched snap. Mangold said, "He made me feel good and said, 'No.' I don't believe him."

--After spending the first 11 days of training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, TE Chris Baker was activated and participated in both practice sessions Monday. Baker had been sidelined with a back problem.

"I was happy (to be activated)," he said. "I can't remember missing any practices in the seven years I've been here in camp and even during the season, so it was a lot different for me to be over here and just working out and not being with the guys on the field. I was happy to get back out, for sure."

Baker is unhappy with his contract and has been seeking a raise, but declined to discuss that.

"I'm not going to talk about the contract today," Baker said. "I'll let my people and (the Jets) handle that, so I'm just working on getting back on the field."

"I'm excited to get Chris back out there," coach Eric Mangini said.

--For the first two weeks of training camp, third-year pro Kellen Clemens was splitting the first-team snaps at quarterback in practice.

That has changed now that Brett Favre is on the scene, and Clemens has gone from competing for a starting job to backing up a legend.

"All of my preparation was going towards winning that battle and then hopefully being the starting quarterback in '08," Clemens said. "The positive that I can take out of it is the opportunity to learn from Brett Favre. The guys who have done it, who have played behind him and learned from him, the (Matt) Hasselbecks and now Aaron Rodgerses of the world, are in great positions. I am going to try to make the most of it."

--Wide receiver Laveranues Coles has declined interview requests from the media. He is a close friend of former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington and is believed to be very upset about his friend being released to make room for Brett Favre.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It does nothing for the guys in (the Jets') locker room. It does nothing for the guys in Green Bay. It really serves no purpose to continue to talk about it." -- QB Brett Favre, on not wanting to talk about the public divorce between himself and the Packers anymore.
