New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2008-12-12
--WR Brad Smith, who suffered a jarring helmet-to-helmet hit from San Francisco's Patrick Willis on Sunday, was not able to practice again Thursday. If Smith isn't able to play Sunday against Buffalo, that could open the door for David Clowney to get his first game action since suffering a broken clavicle in the second preseason game. Clowney is the Jets' fastest wideout and could give the offense the vertical dimension that has been missing.

"He's been very consistent with the 'show' team things that we've asked him to do," coach Eric Mangini said of Clowney. "He's always pressuring the defense in the way that he practices. We've been looking for a way to get him up for quite some time now. ... I have no problem with David being (active) and playing."

--The Jets signed veteran S J.R. Reed, who was released by Philadelphia on Oct. 21, as they continue to look for help for their struggling secondary. Mangini noted that assistant general manager Scott Cohen, who also used to be with the Eagles, was instrumental in Reed's signing.

"He's a very solid contributor on special teams," Mangini said of Reed. "He has played in multiple games and done a good job in different roles."

Don't be surprised if Reed is active Sunday and gets some work covering slot receivers on third down. Drew Coleman and David Barrett both have struggled mightily in that role.

--Somebody asked QB Brett Favre if the last few weeks of the season are "Favre time," and the veteran couldn't help but laugh.

"What is Favre time?" he asked the questioner. "Magic or whatever? We'll see. My intentions are to go out and win every game. My intentions are to go out and make every play a great play. I know that doesn't happen all the time and it makes you scratch your head sometimes. One thing you can bet on is I'll do whatever I can to help this team win -- however that may be, through leadership, throwing, handing off, blocking, or whatever. That's one thing that's a given and I can promise you today."

BY THE NUMBERS: 6.8 -- Yards per pass attempt for QB Brett Favre. His predecessor with the Jets, Miami's Chad Pennington, is averaging 7.8 yards per attempt.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think we're a pretty good football team. I think we've proven that this year, so I don't think we need to change anything. I just think we need to continue doing what we're doing. It's tougher in December. It's tougher for a lot of reasons." -- QB Brett Favre.
