New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2008-10-28
--WR Laveranues Coles caught the game-winning 15-yard touchdown pass from Brett Favre with one minute to play in the Jets' 28-24 win over Kansas City. Coles had suffered a concussion at Oakland one week earlier, and that was believed to be his third concussion in the last 22 months.

"As we talked about through the course of the week, we've been as thorough as we can possibly can be," coach Eric Mangini said, defending the Jets' decision to have Coles play. "Even after he was cleared, we brought in another specialist to reconfirm it so we had another layer on this. It was an independent specialist to make sure any decision we're making about a player's safety is a good decision for the player and the organization."

Said Coles of the winning catch: "Brett trusted me and gave me a chance at the ball, and I made the play."

As for the concussion issue, he said, "The organization does everything they possibly can from what I understand, and as a player, all I can do is listen to them. They deal with it all. I just take all the tests, and if they come back to me and say, 'OK, you're fine, you can play,' or then they say, 'You can't play,' that's the way we approach it. I don't think the doctors would lead me to believe I can play when I can't."

Added Mangini: "I think the touchdown with one minute left was a great indication of how he came through."

--TE Chris Baker's hip "flared up right before the game," Mangini said. Unfortunately for the Jets, it happened after inactive players had been designated for the game. And with backup TE Bubba Franks already out with his own hip injury, that left the Jets with only rookie Dustin Keller, who isn't as strong a blocker as Baker or Franks.

"It made it difficult," Mangini said.

The Jets used reserve G/C Robert Turner on numerous plays as a tight end, and although he blocked well on running plays, he provided no threat as a potential receiver.

"There's not a lot of disguise when you're putting an offensive lineman in those packages," Mangini said, "in terms of what the intent is."

Baker had been listed as questionable two days before the game with a back injury.

--Third-year RB Leon Washington contributed an 18-yard touchdown catch, a 60-yard touchdown run and a 37-yard punt return to set up the Jets' winning drive. Washington was taken in the fourth round of the 2006 draft, with a pick the Jets got as compensation when Herm Edwards left to coach the Chiefs.

"I've never thought about it like that," Washington said Sunday, "not until you mentioned it to me. I guess it was a good trade this week."
