--K Jay Feely was signed by the Jets because incumbent Mike Nugent suffered a strained right thigh on the Jets' second kickoff of the game. Feely went 21-for-23 for Miami on field goals last season but was released last month. He hooked on with Kansas City but was cut again after one day. Feely has a career percentage of 80.8 on field-goal attempts over seven seasons with three teams, including the Giants in 2005-06.
--Facing a third-and-goal from the 2 in the fourth quarter, Miami's Chad Pennington twice threw to a receiver being covered by Dwight Lowery, who broke up the pass both times. Lowery, a rookie, started his first NFL game at right cornerback because Justin Miller (toe) was inactive.
"It was everything that you would expect," Lowery said of his debut. "It was fun. My teammates made me feel real comfortable. They let me know they were there for me. I think that helped out a lot."
"Dwight came in there and played like he'd been playing in the league for a couple of years," linebacker Calvin Pace said, "and that's what you've got to do as a rookie."
Lowery, however, was beaten on David Martin's 11-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
--Wide receiver Laveranues Coles, who hadn't spoken publicly to reporters since close friend Chad Pennington was released, indicated that he felt he was in a no-win situation and thus wanted to wait to speak until after the Jets faced Pennington's new team.
"I just kind of kept to myself," Coles said, "and I wanted to wait until this day to finally let it pass us, and let it be something that's in the rearview mirror. Now it's come and gone and I can return to being me.
"Of course it becomes something you take kind of personal," Coles added. "You always put yourself in his shoes."
But he said that his relationship with Pennington's successor, Brett Favre, is fine.
"There have been no quarrels between Brett and I at all," Coles said. "There have never been any since Day One."
Coles had a five-yard reception from Favre on the Jets' first play from scrimmage, but no catches after that. Favre indicated that he and Coles aren't quite in synch yet because of the time Coles missed during training camp. He is recovering from a hamstring injury.
