New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-04-07
--RB Thomas Jones has been a no-show for the first three weeks of the Jets' off-season conditioning program. Sources indicate the veteran is unhappy with the $900,000 he's scheduled to make this season.

However, he's in the midst of a four-year, $20 million deal that paid him $13.1 million over the last two seasons, including a $10 million signing bonus and other guarantees.

The Jets don't want to give Jones another payday because it would set a bad precedent for other players on the team who are in the middle of multi-year contracts and have at least two years remaining on those deals.

--At the recent NFL owners' meetings, the NFL's Competition Committee voted to try to improve player safety on kickoffs by not allowing teams to have more than two blockers in close proximity. In other words, the wedge blocking formation has been outlawed.

Wallace Wright, one of the Jets' special-teams aces, was unaware of this change until told by a reporter.

"That's fantastic," he said. "Wow, are you kidding me? A lot of teams put big offensive linemen and defensive linemen out there and they use that to their advantage."

Still, while it will benefit him when he is on the kicking team, he isn't sure if the rule will be good for the game.

"I still don't think it's right," Wright said, "that you can limit teams to having only two people in the wedge. Of course it's good for the kickoff team, (but) I think you should give teams more options instead of having it one way. ... I don't necessarily agree with it but the rules are the rules."

--LB Bart Scott was able to get his old number from when he was with Baltimore, and will wear No. 57 as a Jet.

That meant that third-year LB Jason Trusnik had to give up No. 57. No money has changed hands, however, with the switch, and Trusnik now wears No. 96. The outside 'backer is happy with that number, however, because he wore it at Ohio Northern, where he was a two-time Division III All-American.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Every time you put on SportsCenter or the NFL Network, he is the top story in the NFL right now. ... (But) we need to focus on what we have here and move forward. " -- CB Darrelle Revis on dealing with the distraction of the Jay Cutler rumors, which finally will stop for the Jets now that Cutler has been dealt to Chicago
