New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-03-20
--RB Thomas Jones skipped the Jets' off-season conditioning program, which began this week, for the third straight day Wednesday. Sources indicate the veteran is unhappy with the $900,000 he's scheduled to make this season.

Of course, if you look at the big picture, the fact is he's in the midst of a four-year, $20 million deal that paid him $13.1 million over the last two seasons, including a $10 million signing bonus and other guarantees.

The Jets have been down this road before in recent seasons.

Disgruntled LG Pete Kendall skipped the conditioning program and voluntary practices two seasons ago, and TE Chris Baker did the same in 2008. Both were unhappy with their contracts.

Not coincidentally, both are ex-Jets. Kendall was traded to Washington in August 2007 after his standoff with the team continued to escalate, and Baker was released last month and signed by rival New England.

--The Jets prevented former coach Eric Mangini from poaching another one of their players by matching Cleveland's offer sheet to S Abram Elam on Tuesday. Elam, a restricted free agent who started nine games last season, was signed to a one-year, $1.5 million offer sheet by the Browns last week. Cleveland has signed four ex-Jet defenders this off-season: linebackers Eric Barton and David Bowens, defensive lineman C.J. Mosley and defensive back Hank Poteat.

Elam is expected to be used in a reserve role now that the Jets have signed former Raven safety Jim Leonhard to a three-year deal. Elam, a hard hitter and sure tackler, had several big plays for the Jets last season. He returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown in a win at Buffalo and caused a fumble that teammate Shaun Ellis returned for the game-winning score in the rematch with the Bills.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "There is not one guy who's played in that system that doesn't love it and love the freedom and the ability he gives you to make plays in that system." -- New Jets S Jim Leonhard on coach Rex Ryan's system.
