New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-03-13
--The Jets actually signed a free agent who didn't play for Baltimore, proving anything is possible. In fact, they went to their previous breeding ground for veteran signees, New England.

After letting Cody Spencer go (he signed as a free agent with the Lions) the Jets grabbed another special-teams ace, signing 13-year veteran Larry Izzo. Izzo, 34, had been released recently by the Patriots. He knows special teams coach Mike Westhoff from their days together in Miami, his first stop as an undrafted free agent.

Izzo has been listed as one of 39 potential witnesses federal prosecutors who may be called in the perjury trial of Barry Bonds. Izzo is the only NFL player on the witness list.

--Cleveland may soon add green to its traditional colors of brown and orange, to match the greening of the roster.

Another Jet bolted to Cleveland this week to rejoin former Jets coach Eric Mangini. LB David Bowens, released by the Jets last month, signed a four-year, $7.2 million deal with the Browns.

The Browns also have given an offer sheet to restricted free agent SS Abram Elam. The offer sheet is for $1.5 million over one year. And because the Jets tendered him at $1.01 million with no compensation, they will get nothing for him, if they choose not to match it within one week.

So if the Jets don't match, that will bring to four the number of ex-Jets who have signed with Cleveland, as DE C.J. Mosley and CB Hank Poteat have signed with Cleveland already. The Browns also are talking with unrestricted free agent LB Eric Barton.

Barton and Elam have been made expendable by the signings of Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard, respectively, as these teams continue to become the Cleveland Jets and the New York Ravens.

--The Jets probably aren't too worried about Buffalo's signing of talented but disruptive WR Terrell Owens, considering they can cover him with CB Darrelle Revis, a Pro Bowler last year in only his second season in the NFL.

In Dallas' 34-3 Thanksgiving win over the Jets in 2007, Revis shadowed Owens most of the day, limiting him to six receptions for 65 yards. Owens did have a TD, but it came in extended garbage time.

In a conference call before the game, Owens was asked what he thought about Revis, who was in the midst of a very good rookie campaign. T.O.'s response: "I don't know who that is."

After the game, Revis said quietly, "Maybe ask T.O. if he knows who I am now."
