New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-03-06
--RG Brandon Moore admitted he thought his chances of returning to the Jets after being released were "pretty slim," he noted that "it didn't end on bad terms" when he was released. Moore signed a four-year, $16 million deal a day after being cut.

He said he wasn't bothered by the fact that the Jets courted and almost signed Pittsburgh's Chris Kemoeatu before coming back to him. "I understand the business side of it," Moore said. "At the end of the day, I ended up with the team I wanted to be with.'

He said he's happy to have financial security, adding "It feels good to finally put it to rest. My family can relax. This is where I wanted to be. Hopefully, I can end my career here."

Moore is impressed with new coach Rex Ryan, whom he called "a great motivator (and) a straightforward football coach through and through. He's bringing a dynamic to this team I feel was really needed, the motivation, the passion. Guys really feed off that."

One of former coach Eric Mangini's biggest weaknesses was his inability to motivate players, especially on game days.

--Newly-signed S Jim Leonhard didn't quite get the same treatment as Bart Scott when the Jets were pursuing him. While Rex Ryan and two assistant coaches showed up at Scott's house just after midnight on the first day of the free-agency signing period, Leonhard only got a phone call from Ryan at 12:45 a.m. that morning.

"It wasn't quite the same" as Scott, Leonhard said jokingly. "He didn't get attacked by my dogs or anything."

Ryan, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman had been confronted by two loud German shepherds before Scott came outside to calm them down.

--CB Lito Sheppard was a two-time Pro Bowler with Philadelphia. But a contract squabble and some injury problems resulted in him eventually being benched in favor of another Pro Bowler, Asante Samuel. Now Sheppard is looking forward to a fresh start with the Jets.

"It gives me a chance to get back on the football field and be the great player I try to be," he said. "(Philadelphia) was one chapter in my book and I'm starting a new one.

"Obviously, we saw things a little different and one thing led to another," he added. "The best thing for me, if I wanted to continue to play football, was to go elsewhere. That's what we decided on. That's in the past now."

The trade is for the Jets' fifth-rounder this year, and a possible conditional pick next year if certain incentives are reached. That pick could go as high as a second-rounder, but probably won't. If the Eagles do receive a conditional pick next year, the Jets then would receive Philly's fifth-round pick next year to make up for it.

The Jets extended Sheppard's contract two years, so his current deal is for five years, $24 million, and he'll make $3 million this season. But he's owed a $10 million option bonus next March, and the Jets could elect not to pay it and cut a new deal if Sheppard plays well in 2009. If he doesn't have a good season, it could turn out to be a one-year rental.

"Sometimes change can rejuvenate a player," Sheppard said. "If a player is not completely happy, it can affect his play, so the best thing for that player and the organization is to let the player go elsewhere."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We played to get Rex (Ryan) a head coaching job (last year). That was one of the goals on the defensive side. Let's play so good they have no choice but to recognize our defense and the guy that's pulling the trigger on that defense." -- LB Bart Scott on how Baltimore's defensive players were inspired to play for Ryan after he was passed over for the Ravens' head coach position
