New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-03-03
--Linebacker Bart Scott has agreed to a six-year, $48 million contract with the Jets. Scott had been considering returning to Baltimore until the Jets upped their original $40 million offer.

"We added 'the Madbacker' today," coach Rex Ryan said on a conference call, referring to Scott's nickname. "What you've seen him do and accomplish at Baltimore is just the tip of the iceberg for this young man. I think he's going to be even more effective now with the Jets defense."

-- CB Lito Sheppard's trade to the Jets is complete, with the Eagles receiving a fifth-round pick this year and a conditional second- to fifth-round pick in 2010. Sheppard had fallen to fourth on the Eagles' depth chart being starters Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown and nickel back Joselio Hanson. With the Jets, he will be the frontrunner to start opposite Darrelle Revis next season.

"I am excited to be joining the Jets organization," said Sheppard. "It's a fresh new start, a new coach and a new system. I'm looking forward to getting back to playing top-notch football and bringing a winning attitude with me."

--While coach Rex Ryan obviously couldn't be specific about his and Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum's plans when he spoke to reporters at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, he did note that believes his new team can play defense at the level he wants as quickly as the 2009 season, "if we bring in the kind of players that we're talking about," he said.

"We only need to add maybe one or two guys, but the foundation's already there," he added. "I think we'll be terrific and I think we're going to have a defense that our fans can be proud of."

--The Jets released inside linebackers David Bowens and Brad Kassel the week before the free-agent period began. Bowens, who was signed as an unrestricted free agent in March 2007, started five games last season in place of David Harris, and had his first career interception last year.

Kassel signed with the Jets in 2006 and played for two seasons, missing all of the 2008 campaign after suffering a knee injury in the first half of the preseason opener at Cleveland. These two moves will save the Jets about $3 million in cap space.
