New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-02-28
--LinebackerBart Scott has agreed to a six-year, $48 million contract with the Jets, agent Harold Lewis told ESPN. Scott had been considering returning to Baltimore until the Jets upped their original $40 million offer.

--While coach Rex Ryan obviously couldn't be specific about his and Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum's plans when he spoke to reporters at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, he did note that believes his new team can play defense at the level he wants as quickly as the 2009 season, "if we bring in the kind of players that we're talking about," he said.

"We only need to add maybe one or two guys, but the foundation's already there," he added. "I think we'll be terrific and I think we're going to have a defense that our fans can be proud of."

Who are those players? Well, one of them was Ravens outside linebacker Bart Scott, who signed with the team on Feb. 27. The other could be another Raven, safety Jim Leonhard.

--The Jets released inside linebackers David Bowens and Brad Kassel the week before the free-agent period began. Bowens, who was signed as an unrestricted free agent in March 2007, started five games last season in place of David Harris, and had his first career interception last year.

Kassel signed with the Jets in 2006 and played for two seasons, missing all of the 2008 campaign after suffering a knee injury in the first half of the preseason opener at Cleveland. These two moves will save the Jets about $3 million in cap space.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Let me hit the rewind button here if you don't mind." -- Coach Rex Ryan deflecting a second straight question about free agents while at the NFL Combine, not wanting to be charged with tampering
