New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-02-24
--Free safety Kerry Rhodes made it clear in a recent interview that he didn't have any problem with Brett Favre on a personal level.

"He was great to me," Rhodes told Newsday. "Our relationship was great. I liked Brett."

Rhodes said publicly the day after the 2008 season ended that he believed Favre should participate in the team's off-season program if he wanted to come back in 2009. Rhodes said he and Favre later talked about those comments.

Really, Rhodes was correct. Favre's shoulder problems in 2008 likely had something to with the fact that his most strenuous off-season workouts prior to that campaign were spent with a local high school team, hardly the proper way for an aging world-class athlete to get into shape for an NFL season.

--When offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was asked about wide receiver David Clowney, who didn't get much of a chance to prove himself under former coach Eric Mangini, Schottenheimer was quite complimentary. Clowney, and undrafted free agent from Virginia Tech, could provide the Jets with the element of speed they've been lacking at that position.

"The one play that sticks out in my mind," Schottenheimer said, "is one that we had him on an inside fade route against Seattle up the boundary on Marcus Trufant. He got on top of him and Brett (Favre) underthrew it a little bit."

In fact, Clowney had two steps on Trufant and had Favre hit him in stride, it could've been a touchdown. Instead, it was an incompletion in the Jets' 13-3 loss.

"David is a guy that when you're at practice and even if you're not watching him, you feel his speed," Schottenheimer added. "You know when he is around because he is so fast and I think that's a great attribute."

--The Jets signed five "street" free agents, three of whom have appeared in regular-season NFL games. They are cornerback Tyron Brackenridge, who returned a fumble 50 yards for a TD for Kansas City in a win over San Diego on Sept. 30, 2007; defensive end Sean Conover, who played in parts of two seasons with Tennessee and totaled 25 tackles; and linebacker Nate Harris, who led the Chiefs with 20 special teams tackles in 2007. The other signees are cornerback Marquice Cole, who was with the Tennessee practice squad in 2007 and New Orleans practice squad last year, and defensive tackle Nate Robinson, who was briefly in the Giants' camp last summer before being cut. All were undrafted free agents.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I never got that sense. The way the offensive guys worked, prepared and interacted in the meetings was very professional and also light and loose. I never got that sense. If asked about that, I would not have thought anything other than what I witnessed." --Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer on the anonymous claim by a player that Brett Favre was "distant" from his teammates.
