Eric Mangini insists that everything is OK with the Jets and a win is a win is a win. Never mind that the Jets' 28-24 sigh of relief against Kansas City on Sunday was their second lackluster home victory over an overmatched opponent in three weeks.

"If you start taking into account expectations of how you perform," the Jets coach said Monday, "and what you should do and not work on the things that you have to get done to win that game, it doesn't help. ... Any disappointment (for the players) should be channeled into work to improve."

And there is plenty of room for that when the Jets (4-3) visit Buffalo (5-2) on Sunday. The Bills and the Patriots are tied for first place in the AFC East.

The Jets' record stamps them as contenders in the division, too, although their recent performances might suggest otherwise. They struggled past winless Cincinnati 26-14 on Oct. 12, and then lost at dysfunctional Oakland 16-13 in overtime on Oct. 19. Against the Chiefs, they needed a 15-yard scoring pass from Brett Favre to Laveranues Coles with one minute left to win the game.

Another performance such as those probably won't cut it on the road against the Bills, who have beaten the Jets in the last three meetings.

"To say we can't play that way (at Buffalo) and win, I don't know," free safety Kerry Rhodes said. "Anything can happen in this league, and I don't want to say that the way we played to beat Kansas City that we can't beat other teams (playing that way). I don't want to demean (the Chiefs). But if we played that way against a lot of teams, it may not be a good outcome."

In fact, it could be a very bad result. The Jets overcame a 3-0 turnover deficit against Kansas City and a terrific performance by young Tyler Thigpen of Coastal Carolina, who was the much better No. 4 on Sunday. He threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, while Favre had three picks and two touchdown passes.

While Favre must cut down on his mistakes, the Jets defense needs to force more of them from opponents. The Jets have only one takeaway in the last three games, Hank Poteat's strip sack of Cincinnati quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"Turnovers are something that you work on, or sometimes may just come your way," said Rhodes, who had five picks last season but still is looking for his first one in 2008. "Sometimes you can force them, but turnovers are a funny thing. Teams do (certain) things with the ball and you can't get it, but it's something that we work on and it's something that we try to do every week and it's a big thing for us. We have been turnover-less for a couple games, so we'll try to step it up."

Defensive end Kenyon Coleman said, "It's something that you have to focus on, not that we haven't focused on it in practice lately. We can look at the last few games and make more of an effort to make that happen and concentrate on it. I'm sure we'll get it done."
