Brett Favre made sure he paid attention during this bye week, which is something different than he was in Green Bay.

Because he pretty much had a Ph.D in the Packers' West Coast offense, Favre could let his mind wander a little bit during the meetings.

"This (week) is a little bit different," he said with a smile Tuesday, "only because in the past, when we had meetings during the bye week, my eyes were open, but they were closed, if that makes any sense. 'Oh, yeah, I heard you, coach.' Yeah, right. Then I needed to look over (and ask someone), 'What did he say?'"

Even after a career-high six-touchdown performance against a banged-up Arizona defense on Sunday, Favre knows he has to pay a bit more attention this week.

"This is obviously different because I'm still learning," said Favre, who was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance. "Watching film just now, I really kind of went back over plays that we've run this year and some of the concepts we've run. There were obviously some good things, a lot of production, but there were a lot of things I could have done better."

That's the perfectionist in Favre, and that attitude certainly is one of the reasons he eventually will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He still rues a couple of plays he left on the field in a 48-29 loss at San Diego last week. Twice, he noted, he didn't see an open Jerricho Cotchery.

The plays "were open, and I read it differently," Favre said. "I have continued to read it differently. One of the things we discussed in there was either not calling the play, or obviously reading it the way they read it here. We had a play somewhat similar in Green Bay. There was a little subtle difference, which made a huge difference here. And I'm wrong. They're right."

In that case, yes. But in other cases, the Jets have done the right thing and tweaked their offense to suit Favre.

In the third preseason game, the last one Favre played in, the first-team offense drew five penalties before the ball was snapped for false starts, illegal motion, and the like. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who is in his third season, likes to use plenty of pre-snap motion and shifting.

Favre publicly indicated Green Bay hadn't used much motion and shifting while he was there, and since then, the Jets have used it sparingly. A wise move by Schottenheimer.

Favre obviously has made tremendous strides in his comfort level with this offense, less than two months after being traded to the Jets. And his teammates have noticed.

"He's not forgetting the play call in the huddle (anymore)," right tackle Damien Woody said. "He's definitely more comfortable in the offense. Guys are more comfortable with him calling the plays. We're more in sync. Now, you will start to see his true abilities really start to come out on the football field, and by no means is this a finished product. I think it's just going to get better and better."

Favre "has really evolved" in the offense, tight end Chris Baker said, "and he's obviously had to study a lot. He's taking ownership and he understands what we're trying to do and the concept of everything we're doing. Obviously, we have incorporated some stuff that he likes and he used to do. There has been a lot of effort put into it and I guess you could say you saw some of that on Sunday with some of the results."

"I think the production is obvious," said Favre, who intends to do some more film study on Thursday before going home to Mississippi for the weekend. "(But) there are some things that people really don't see. If you really got in there and broke the film down, you'd go, 'Man, I see what you're talking about.' I don't want to look back at the end of this season, like I did after San Diego, and say either I didn't feel comfortable with it, or there were plays to be made" that weren't.
