New York Jets Inside Slant 2009-03-20

New York Jets Inside Slant 2009-03-20
Last August, the Jets couldn't resist the chance to trade for an aging, legendary gunslinger to be their starting quarterback.

And we now know the acquisition of future Hall of Famer Brett Favre didn't quite work out the way the Jets planned, as he slumped down the stretch, throwing nine interceptions and two touchdown passes in the last five games as the Jets stumbled to a 1-4 finish that left them out of the playoffs.

Yet it's possible this spring the Jets again could go after a swashbuckling quarterback, a much younger one who often has been compared to Favre for his strong arm and his penchant for trying to fit passes into extremely tight spaces.

Denver's Jay Cutler wants to be on the trading block after what he perceived as a major slight when the Broncos bandied about his name during trade discussions. But it's not yet clear that Denver will capitulate to his desires.

Still, picture this scenario, Jets' fans: a cold, windy December day in the Meadowlands. In a game crucial to the Jets' playoff hopes, Cutler throws two, perhaps three costly interceptions as the boos rain down from the stands.

And it doesn't end there. Monday's newspaper headlines blare "A Cut Below" or maybe "Not Making The Cut." Meanwhile, the message boards and the radio shows spend days dissecting the quarterback's performance, and wonder if he has the right stuff to succeed in this market.

OK, so maybe Cutler would play quite well if the Jets acquired the disgruntled signal caller from Denver. But how will he handle the inevitable on-field adversity?

Probably not very well, judging by his current standoff with first-year Denver coach Josh McDaniels. Cutler feels quite disrespected by the fact that McDaniels briefly entertained thoughts of trading him away weeks ago when the former New England offensive coordinator was attempting to pry prized pupil Matt Cassel away from the Patriots.

Certainly he has a right to be upset. But Cutler has taken that feeling to the extreme, by skipping the Broncos' first day of voluntary off-season conditioning and demanding to be traded.

This is not about Cutler's physical toughness. The fact that he is excelling in the NFL despite having Type 1 diabetes answers that question. But what about his mental toughness? Some players would react to such a slight by vowing to show the current coach that he made a mistake to even consider dealing the player, but Cutler's reaction seems to be to run away from the situation altogether.

Also keep in mind that if Denver does trade Cutler, it would likely want at least a semi-established quarterback in return, something the Jets don't have at the moment. So would, say, a first-round pick be worth it for a player who already has shown how he prefers to deal with adversity and perceived criticism? No, and especially not in the unforgiving football market that is the New York metropolitan area.
