Barring an incredible turn of events, it appears Laveranues Coles' second tour of duty with the Jets is over.

The organization's pre-free agency housecleaning continued Wednesday as the Jets and Coles reached an agreement for him to become an unrestricted free agent. Coles, who wants a long-term deal, will be able to test the open market. Because of this agreement, the guaranteed $6 million the Jets owed him for the upcoming season won't count on this year's cap for the team.

"This move will allow Laveranues to explore his options, and we both agreed to keep the lines of communication open," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. He also called Coles a "fierce competitor, a great teammate and a good friend who has always given his best to the New York Jets."

Coles, 31, first made his desire for a long-term contract public in Dec. 2007. Coles and the Jets talked about a contract extension the following winter, but all they agreed to was that all $11 million of his remaining two-year deal would be guaranteed. Coles had 70 receptions for 850 yards and seven touchdowns in 2008.

Coles wants to set himself up for the rest of his career with a new contract, and that's understandable. However, the Jets' position is equally understandable.

While Coles has played with pain a lot with the Jets, and often played well in such cases, he is believed to have two concussions in less than a year, starting with one suffered on Christmas night 2006 at Miami, courtesy of a hit from Zach Thomas. He also has had problems with foot and ankle injuries, and to make a big financial commitment to him at this point doesn't seem like the soundest investment.

In his two stints with the Jets, from 2000-02 and 2005-08, Coles compiled 172 receptions for 5,941 yards and 37 touchdowns. To replace him, the Jets could go after a free agent such as Cincinnati's T.J. Houshmandzadeh or look for someone in an April draft that will be rich in wide receivers. They also could promote one of their younger receivers, such as Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey or speedster David Clowney, to Coles' spot.
