Strickland, who played the last three seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, is expected to serve as a backup to projected starters Darrelle Revis and Lito Sheppard and play in nickel and dime packages.
New coach Rex Ryan has added Strickland, Sheppard and safety Jim Leonhard to a defense that ranked 29th against the pass last season, while allowing Ty Law and Hank Poteat to become free agents and cutting David Barrett.
Strickland was a third-round pick of Indianapolis in 2003 and has also played with Philadelphia. He has 147 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 49 NFL games.
