JETS GM: I WISH YOU WELL, BRETT
In the "where-there's-smoke-there's-fire" department, Brett Favre seemingly took a step closer to returning to the NFL yesterday when Vikings head coach Brad Childress traveled to Mississippi to visit the Hall of Fame-bound quarterback.

Childress, who has coveted Favre since last year, when the Packers traded him to the Jets , was scheduled to meet with Favre last night and today, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune yesterday.

Favre, who was granted his outright release from the Jets last week, is free to sign with any team.

"As I've said in the past, Brett will be a friend of the Jets for years to come," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "I appreciate his contributions and wish him well in whatever he decides to do."

According to an ESPN report, Childress and Favre have agreed that "sometime soon" after their meeting Favre will decide whether to sign with the Vikings.

One factor is Favre's partially torn right biceps tendon, which he claims caused him to lose velocity on his passes when the Jets lost four of their last five games and missed the playoffs. Favre has not had surgery on the arm, and it's unclear whether he'll agree to do so if he returns.

In a separate report in USA Today, Favre's agent, Bus Cook, denied that Favre has been working out at home and he denied a report that he was looking to hire an out-of-work quarterbacks coach to help get Favre ready for a return.

Given Cook's past twisting of the truth when it comes to Favre, you must take everything he says with caution.

Favre has admitted that his primary reason for wanting to return last year was to get revenge on the Packers, who he believes pushed him out the door in Green Bay.

That's why he has wanted to play for the Vikings, who not only play the Packers twice a year as division rivals but who are in need of a quarterback. Favre, too, is friendly with the coaching staff in Minnesota.

"If he wants to play again, it's not going to be to get revenge," Cook said. "Are there certain things about the Packers, how things ended there and he felt they didn't treat him right? That's true. Does he have a certain vendetta against them? That's not true."

The Vikings' quarterbacks stable includes the underwhelming likes of Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels.
