I've been watching the moves of new Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini. My feelings have been mixed, but that's normal with a coaching change.
I've found it odd that he has brought in several former New York Jets. Mangini coached the Jets from Jan. 17, 2006, until the end of last season. His teams were 10-6, 4-12 and 9-7. Mangini has not produced any powerhouses, so I'm not so sure how many ex-Jets I want to see playing for the Browns.
Then a few days ago Mangini sent shock waves through Browns nation. He and Brett Favre, the Jets starting QB last season, have been discussing the possibility of Favre working in Browns camp this summer. Apparently he couldn't become a full-time assistant coach because he is still under contract to the Jets.
The idea would be for Favre to be a guest instructor for Cleveland's young QBs, Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. Yikes.
Years ago I asked Frank Robinson what was the most difficult part of going from player to manager. He said at first (with the Cleveland Indians), he expected his players to play the way he did.
Favre was a great quarterback. His special talents allowed him to gamble and win. Anderson and Quinn have fine arms but they are upstarts. They need to work on fundamentals.
But what really bothers me is this: Contract obligations can be worked out. Once Favre gets to Browns camp, I fear he will be in uniform. Worse, I fear he will be Cleveland's starter in the opener.
